I'm going to blame YouTube for my fascination with folks cruising the cut in their narrowboats IRL and I'm wondering if we have anything like that here in Secondlife?

I know there's lots of new stuff down in Bellisseria, but haven't noticed and true canals network as it were with locks and pounds and such. My curiosity has the best of me

and i'm wishing like crazy this may happen some day.

There are many canals in the Babbage area.  Not sure about locks. It is a Victorian Steampunk theme.

Bay City has a lot of canals running through it, no locks though. There are bridges however, so how you navigate it is going to depend partly on what kind of boat you use. It would be a good idea to keep your map up as certain turns can lead you into the dead ends of regions bordering a void.

There's a place on the western coast of Bellessaria where the sea level water meets a higher lake level. There are rocks and a waterfall, and it's impassable by boats. It would be neat if that place had a lock, or something, so you could get to the lake level.

There is at least one place in SL where there's a water level difference you can take a boat through. It's amusing; you can go in either direction with equal ease. The boat is lifted or dropped at the region crossing as it crosses to a region with a different water level.

Locks would be an interesting engineering problem for SL. With cooperation from a script in the boat to change the buoyancy level, it would be straightforward. Without that, the boat would have to be supported in a cradle during the lift. Maybe a visible cradle, like a ship lift, or an invisible cradle, to maintain the lock illusion. One of my low-priority projects, once I get done with the NPC system, is to finish my marine railway for launching a boat across the narrow strip of sand from my coastside house in Bellessaria to the ocean. Same idea.

Hey Animats - how is your marine railway project?  Where would I find the area you mention in Bellessaria (on the western coast of Bellessaria where the sea level water meets a higher lake level)?

I should finish the marine railway and make it fully functional. Right now, it extends the track from land to water on command, but the boat carrier does not travel down the track. It's really just a one-off for me, not a product. It's only useful if you own land very close to water but there's a narrow strip of Linden land to be crossed.

As for water level changes, I need to find that place again. It looks like white water, and you can get a small boat through.
