And you can buy an entire private region (but not parts of one).  I have owned a private estate for many years, myself, but have never been a Premium member. The only place you cannot buy any land is in the Mainland estate.

Hi @Aroid Boa!

You have to be a Premium member to buy Mainland.  You can obtain the Mainland by getting a free Linden Home, buying land in the Land Auctions, or buying a parcel that's being sold by another resident.

You can RENT Mainland from another resident without needing a Premium membership.

You can also rent a parcel on a private estate without a Premium membership.  This is often called "buying" the parcel, but it's really a form of renting.

The thing you have to understand is that ALL land ownership in SL is a form of "renting".

If you are Premium and buy Mainland, you pay an initial purchase price and then a monthly "tier" fee.  In effect, you are "renting" the land directly from LL.

If you rent Mainland from another resident, you have a middleman...your landlord.  But you are still paying rent, either weekly or monthly.

If you "buy" a parcel on a private estate, you are also paying rent to a middleman...the estate owner.

So I do not want to buy a LOT of land, just a little bit and put up a house.  Can I buy land some place (not rent) with out being a preminum (paying) member of SL?

direct answer ( i'm mostly shorter than the ladies, who always explain a lot more)

you can not buy a lot (lot = part) to own, and for a one time price.
