No, I see a lot of variety depending on where I go thankfully! Formal, costumes, modern royalty, steampunk, kimono, Victorian, dystopia, cyberpunk, doll and Lolita fashion stuff, the amazing not-human-at-all avatars! And I love all of that! But I seek it out. Those are the places I live and/or hang out in.

But...I think many of the current ‘shopping event fashions’ for really the past 3 or so years look very boring. So, that’s to say most of the SL fashion bloggers too. Not much couture, way too few gowns, not much NPIRL-type stuff, few fab costumes or amazing fantasy avatars, very few unusual pieces that are not very similar to RL stuff I actually *could* pick up at the mall. So now other than hopping in to grab 1-2 items, I only go to maaaaybe 3-4 special themed shopping events per year and I like that way lots better.

edit: @Gopi Passiflora do I look like a mall rat? 🙃

None of the photos of me were only ‘for a photo shoot’, I was at events or doing stuff. I guess that’s maybe the only difference I can think of. Lots of bloggers just dress up to blog event fashion (platform dwellers) and lots of people just hang out shopping or at clubs. Or in green dot places to see/be seen?

I don't really know what "mallrat" means. It sounds like a derogatory term but I can't see what's wrong with the four young women in that pic. Aren't they just normal looking people? Is that the point, that you'd rather see extreme or specific fashions and styles, like steampunk or something? I'm sure you can find that if you know where to look.

So I don't know about mallrats, but certainly a lot of avatars appear to have been crafted by people who have never seen a human body.

I think it all depends on where you are at. From what I have seen, most women tend to look like strippers/escorts and the men look like they all either want to be rappers or they just got out of prison.

It's a derogatory term used to describe people (teens, generally) who waste their time hanging around malls doing nothing. It stems from thoughts like "Look at those troublemakers. They're so loud. They're in everybody's way. Don't they have anything better to do? They're not even shopping. They're just wasting all their money at Starbucks/McDonalds." And being teens, they usually wear whatever the current fad in fashion is. Pointlessly expensive brand names, etc. The more stereotypical the appearance (depending on the area, obviously), there more appropriate the term becomes.

Edit, general definitions: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Mallrats

Oh, ok. Your edit answered my question, thanks.

SMH.

When I was a teen we didn't have any malls so we hung out on the street doing nothing the proper way. Youngsters today have it way too easy.

In my area, the ‘mall rats’ are seniors in expensive track suits and trainers doing their walking laps and then getting a Starbucks. Younger kids hang at the arcade/tabletop game shop, boba tea shop and the the movies, college age stay on campus, go to the gym or hang out in the hipster area at the bars, hookah den, food truck park and the 2 record shops.

“Malls are for chumps.”

I was gonna say, malls barely even exist anymore.

Theres a few in big cities but they’re dead and gone everywhere else. I think 15 malls have closed just around me in the last decade? From the Chicago south suburbs to Michigan City, the ones that haven’t entirely died are now just maybe one store and a few phone kiosks.

Only if the mall rats (and I have to agree the only ones now are seniors in jogging suits doing laps) look like very, hyper exaggerated versions of Kim Kardashian. I've been to a few areas lately where everyone is all exaggerated hips, boobs, lips, eyebrows... :::shudders & then shrugs "you do you"::: Otherwise I have to agree with @Fauve Aeon. The places I tend to go the avatars are blissfully different.
