Exactly as Alyona says, sign up for a new account the same way that  you signed up for your first one.  Each account is unique, even if two or more are owned by the same person. As far as Linden Lab is concerned, your two accounts are strangers to each other.  Each has its own inventory, its own L$ and USD budget lines, its own friends list ....  You can use the same payment method for more than one account if you wish, and you can use the same e-mail account (although that can get confusing, so I recommend setting up a separate e-mail for your alt account, just for peace of mind).

Now that you HAVE another avatar account, by following Alyona's and Rolig's advice, can you have both of them logged in at the same time?  You bet!

There are two ways to do it.  One way is to install two different viewers on your PC...for example, the standard SL viewer and the Firestorm viewer.  Then log one in on the SL viewer.  Click the  "windowed" icon at the top right of the screen, between the minimized ( - ) icon and the Close (X) icon.  Re-size your window to fill about half your monitor.  Now open up the Firestorm viewer, log your other avatar in, and do the same thing.

The other way is to allow ONE viewer to run multiple "instances".  Right click the desktop icon shortcut for your viewer.  Select Properties. In the Target window, it should say something like C:\Program Files\Firestorm-Releasex64\Firestorm-Releasex64.exe"   There may be additional text there, too.  To the right of any text, add " -multiple".  No quotation marks, and be sure there is one space in front of the dash character.  Now, start your viewer as in the previous method.  Then, just double click its icon and start it again!

When running multiple avatars, the hardest trick is to always type your chat or IM in the correct window!

it's a lot easier to go to prefernces / advanced / Allow multiple viewers
No chance to mess up your shortcut lines.

If your shortcut is hidden under the open windows, right click the running viewer button in the taskbar.. click the icon in the menu and the second viewer will start.
