Please educate me on shapes!!

I've had the same old shape for years. Now I'm looking to upgrade. 
Can someone explain how shapes and clothing works now? 

I see there are several types of shapes (SIGNATURE / THE MESH PROJECT / SLINK). Are these sold by one particular store? Which? 
For clothing, are clothes designed for these shapes ONLY usable on the ones specified? So you cannot add an ALPHA layer and wear the item with any other shape type?

As you can see I'm 100% out of touch with shapes and fashion so please help me update!!

(SIGNATURE / THE MESH PROJECT / SLINK) are not shapes they are mesh bodies. you wear a shape with it just as you do now. 

there are several mesh body makers to choose from. signature, slink, belleza, aestethic, adam, The Mesh Project, Altamura, exmach and even the RothToo. you find their different mesh bodies in their shops or marketplace. Demo them and see what you like. wear your shape or anyshape they come with which you can edit.

some can use other mesh bodies clothing some can not. and the mesh bodies does come with an alpha hud.

Ok so my shape is HUNTER II from "the body co." 
So I can buy any mesh body and wear this shape with it? 
Also, why do some clothes ONLY work with certain mesh bodies?

yes you can buy any mesh body to wear with your shape... however if the mesh body comes with a head you need to wear the shpe it comes with to start with you can write down your shpaes numbers and set them in the new shapes body(not the head - but you can edit the head )

different bodies, so the clothing made for a specific body is rigged for that body and might now work so well with another body.

A mesh body is an object worn over a system body. It responds to the shape sliders, but not necessarily in the same way as the system body does, so you may need to tweak your shape (save as a new copy of course). Most important thing to do is take your time and demo demo demo. Also, the less skin you have showing, the less it matters if you're wearing a mesh body, provided of course that you can find clothes you like. And if there are clothing brands you like, demo their stuff with your mesh body demo to see how it all plays together.

And yes, it is ridiculously confusing. There is a lot of jargon to learn and it's easy for experienced people to forget to back track enough in explaining.

@Skell Dagger is the expert on men's mesh bodies. He has a blog, just search for his name.

Any time you see these on an item of mesh clothing it means that item is rigged for that particular brand of body that is worn to replace the system body rather than shape if you search for these brands using search the store you can buy them in will come up except for TMP/Legacy where you need to search "The Shops". If these bodies are BoM enabled you can use an alpha layer otherwise they include an alpha HUD that allows you to alpha out certain sections of the body. well worth demoing all the available male bodies, If you want a body that's easy to shop for you won't have much trouble finding stuff rigged for Signature Geralt & Gianni, Slink, Belleza Jake & TMP/Legacy

Yeah I know, I just found that really funny. Not only does it take pretty much zero effort to create one, isn't the whole point of SL to be individualistic and create your own avatar? I also found people selling physics on marketplace as well... just wow. What's next, selling landmarks? /4head

It actually takes more skill than most people realize. This by the majority examples across the grid, though this is nothing new. Most of the purchased shapes are not about the body (the bod shapes are more often. than not: horrible) - it's about the face, to use as a base-line to further customize. Which also is why it is just this side of hilarious when people sell no-modify shapes.
