I'd say to let your imagination run wild, but people who do that before they get the basics down solid are likely to either create bad habits or go down in flames of discouragement.  It may be less interesting, but I'd recommend practicing on relatively simple geometric projects first.  Make a vase. Create a maze of hamster tunnels.  Build an outhouse.  Make a collection of hats.  You can learn a lot of fundamental techniques by doing short projects that are self-contained and challenging but not overwhelming.  If you do a tiny bit of Internet research, you can find tutorials for doing many things to build your toolkit and confidence.

There is an inworld group called Blender Benders.  They offer a long sequence of classes on the popular, free Blender 3D software.  The next series is supposed to start sometime in December/January.  Join the group, and keep up with the notices for updates.

I can strongly recommend the Blender Bender's classes that Lindal mentioned. I've been going to them for 38 weeks now and they're very comprehensive and you can ask Graham any questions on things that may be unclear. The classes are free, too although I'd recommend tipping Graham for his splendid work on the classes.
