Avitar floats instead of sitting

When I try to sit on a chair my avitar will assume the position but floats in that position maybe 4 to 6 feet up.  I am using Firestore when this happens.   When I go into my SL viewer only her head is above ground.  Not sure what I did.   Would I lose any inventory or avitars if I uninstalled the viewers?

Often what has happened is the dialog asking if it is "OK to animate the avatar" has not popped up or it is hidden. Stand and then set again. Make sure nothing is covering the area where you 'blue' dialogs open. It may take two tries to get the dialog open.

In laggy areas this can be a pain.

Make sure you don't have your AO overwriting the sitting animations.
That's something that shouldn't be included on AOs today, since anything you sit on other than a basic box will have its own animations, and AO that tries to overwrite those is gonna put you too high or too low.
Most HUD AOs have a the option to turn off just the sits, not the whole AO, look into that.
