why are some avi red on their  face and have yellow stockings? with letters on them?

The red faces and strange textures on other avatars are because they are using a new avatar customisation feature called 'Bakes on Mesh' (BOM). Even if you don't intend to use that feature yourself, it's recommended to update your viewer to one that supports Bakes on Mesh, because otherwise you're going to see more and more people looking like that.
