Broken Parcel

My partner and I were renting 2 adjacent parcels which we had joined together using the instructions found at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Joining_and_subdividing_land

Each parcel had a designated capacity of 7492 prims, making a total of 14984 of which we had used around 10000. When we decided no longer wanted the expense of 1 of the parcels we decided we should let it go if we could make enough room for all our prims in the remaining parcel, which meant cutting back from 10000 to 7492.

Unfortunately my partner forgot this last step, and went ahead and subdivided the land (and gave up ownership of the unwanted one) while we still had too many prims, and it's been pretty catastrophic:

- Unsurprisingly, parts of our builds disappeared in the overspill.

- The lost objects appeared in our Lost & Found folders, many of them arbitrarily bunched together as multiple objects (with unhelpful names!)

- most of our builds are now unnavigable: although they look fine (apart from all the missing items here and there), when we TP to them we either walk really sluggishly, float in space forever, or get thrown to one side. It feels like there are giant invisible prims all over the place obstructing us.

Our landlords have twice restarted the Sim, and that didn't help.

We accept that we may have to return all of our objects to our inventory and start from scratch, but can anyone deduce/explain from this experience what has happened? Have some of the remaining objects glitched in dimensions perhaps, and if so is there any way of identifying them so we can avoid rezzing them again?

We're new to this and would appreciate any insights! :)

what has happened?

You now have what is called a "Coalesced Object" - its icon looks like Rubics Cube with a piece missing. When you rez that it will rez all the separate parts in exactly the same position, relative to one of those pieces (the one that gives the name to the bundle).

How to "fix" this:

  • Go to a SANDBOX. If you are Premium account then Premium Sandbox is best, otherwise search places for Sandbox.
  • Locate a clear area, away from sandbox/region edges. Press CTRL+3 to open your EDIT widget.
  • Alt-Cam away from yourself, have a wide overview of the area, preferably from high above.
  • Drag the Coalesced object from inventory to the ground - AWAY from you. CO NOT CLICK YOUR MOUSE until EVERYTHING has rezzed.
  • Full rezzing can take a long time depending on many conditions, be patient. Once all is rezzed, ALL will be selected - move the entire into a comfortable space.

At this point you can click on the ground or whatever and look more closely at what is there. The general rule is that for items that are copyable (you still have the original in inventory) you can just delete it. Anything that is no-copy or your own creation that you want to keep, just right-click and TAKE. Theyt will go into your Objects folder, so you may have to organize them afterward.

Good luck!

Thank you! That's very good advice on how and where to open the Coalesced Objects.

I think perhaps some other objects have coalesced but remained on the build, causing some sort of error in prim physics that makes it difficult for us to walk around as normal. I will investigate more.

If you use Firestorm, there's a trick that shold make it easier to disentangle a bundle:

  1. Create a folder in the root directory of your inventory and give it a very simple name. Let's name it A.
  2. Type Ctrl-3 to open the edit window.
  3. Rez the bundle in a sandbox while the edit window is open.
  4. Once all objects are rezzed (and while they are all selected!) type "ztake on A" - exactly like that except without the quotes - in local chat.
  5. Watch as Firestorm grabs your items one after another and places them neatly into folder A.
  6. When all is cleared, type "ztake off" (again without the quotes) in local chat.

More info about it here: https://wiki.firestormviewer.org/fs_zdrop_ztake_mtake

Off topic historical tidbit: When LL switched to returning items in bundles rather than individually, they actually had the nerve to say it was on request from the users. Did anyb ody ever fall for that?

That's a completely different issue of course. A huge change in the region cotnent like this is likely to cause serious distrubances to the sim and ghosted objects and sluggish performance is only to be expected for a little while. A restart should fix all of that though. The only solution I can think fo is to ask the owner to ask LL to do a more thorough restart of the sim. (Yes, there are different "levels" of restarts and the basic one doesn't always work.)

Thanks for that advice. The ztake trick looks very useful, as does that whole wiki!

And I've now asked my landlords to ask LL for a higher-level restart. Fingers crossed :)

Thanks again!
