  1. Determine and define which direction is the object's "front."
    You can, for example, use a vector like <1, 0, 0> (meaning positive X is forward) and account for the object's current rotation.

  2. Get the rotational difference between the object's front and "north." (Positive Y, probaby.)

  3. Rotate by that amount.
