But LL is a business and that comes first.

But this is the entire premise of my point. Do we really need to tell LL what is in their best interests, as a business?

The huge problem I see here is that the Lab would be putting themselves in a no win situation because no matter what criteria they use to determine which regions to adopt they will certainly without fail have residents crying fowl and favoritism.

Probably true. Should we care, though? Should they? It's their business, and they get to call the shots -- just as a sim owner can make entirely arbitrary decisions about their sim.

As I see it, there's a sort of general confusion of categories here. Maintaining an abandoned region for business purposes isn't "socialism" (and I know that you aren't claiming that it is, but others have) or public-spiritedness, or philanthropy, or governmental overspending. It would most assuredly be a business decision.

That's why I believe residents should support the builds/regions they want to see continue in the world.

I agree totally. But it most often doesn't happen. The tragedy of the commons?

Out of curiosity, why not?

If LL has determined that the relatively small sums involved add to the value of their product (i.e., SL), then why would they not?

I think there is a sort of mistaken assumption here that LL taking over and maintaining popular or interesting regions is somehow "doing favours" for the original region owner. It's not: it's entirely an exercise in self-interest.

To put it another way, they are simply appropriating something someone else has put the time, effort, and money into building, and turning it to their own advantage.

Agree. It’s advertising. These outstanding regions show us all, newcomers esp, what can be done in SL in a given era.

Sounds more like the residents playing favorites with the sims/regions they want to keep in SL. No one wants their region/sim/parcel/land to live or die on the whims of strangers.

I think that there's always a tension between "popularity" (which is, in a sense, about how effective something is) and the need to not reduce everything to homogeneity. Yes, we need movie theatres, and they service more people than art galleries and theatres. But without the latter, we would be much impoverished.

In SL, if the only criterion were popularity, we'd have nothing left by box stores and sex sims.

I think

Why the desire to make something permanent that is essentially experiential? For me, I'd rather have it be a pleasant memory, forever in my mind, my imagination in part. If it came back for real it would likely disappoint.

I'm sure you'll make a good case for it!  I might even agree, partially   :)

Residents who want a part in selecting regions to save should pay for that privilege. On an ongoing basis. Which will not happen. But if these regions are for the purpose of showcasing SL, their cost is LLs cost of doing business, and choosing them is their prerogative.

My post didn't have anything to do with popularity yet everything to do with biased favoritism. Giving preferential treatment to someone simply because you don't like someone else, regardless of quality, talent, etc.

Welp. That leaves me out since I can't afford to pay for the air I breathe.

simple solution when you go somewhere if you want it kept pay to its upkeep, most have tip jars....dont want to pay then obviously its not worth that much to you. Sims that pay their way will continue. Those people dont value enough to pay for will die as they should

going to put some numbers up just to be controversial and point out something

taking worst case a sim costs 300us$ = 30 x 2500 L$ = 75000 l$ a month

a "popular sim has 100 regular visitors. To keep the sim there they only need to contribute 750 l$a month each in tips or a little less than 200 l$ a week

dont know about most here but I certainly spend more than that on tips on a night out dancing

So my response to people like the op is if people actually cared about these sims they would be funded. If they arent then frankly no one cares and they may as well just be returned to the pool till someone creates something people do want

I think of these regions as national parks. They are treasures to be preserved for the enjoyment of all, enduring monuments to SL history and creativity. They also increase the value of SL, which adds to LLs value.

Then put your money where your mouth is, its a simple premise

Sim's don't need to be saved, sim's should just be cheaper. I'm baffled why players can't host their own sim/land using their own IP connection like you could on OpenSim, Or Minecraft.

If only land was more affordable, there would be a lot more to do.

Land is now a bit over half the price it was a few years ago.

I do miss many builds from the past though, so I totally understand the sentiment. If we really love a build then it is up to the residents to start supporting the creator by donating tier or money on a regular basis to their land group to maintain those builds otherwise it's just wishes and lip service.

Just can agree with you.
Best example is Hangar Liquides, maybe. I went there quite a few times, and guess what, mostly i was on my own. No one bothered to go there when it still was there, but now it has to be saved by LLs? What for?

About 10 years ago, the geniously crafted "Greenies Home" was looking outstanding real, considerung the fact it was built with normal prims, not even sculpties. I still remember how the coke spilled out of the huge bottle.
These days probably no one of the newbies would be impressed, because Mesh looks so much better. And maybe even the older ones of us would be disappointed if we could go back there, because we would expect to be impressed like we have been 10 years ago.

I will keep all the lovely memories of the vanished places, but dont need to go back.

One problem with 'saving' a great sim is that when it goes into such preservation mode it can either be:

  1. Statically locked. And so when you visit it years later it looks... seriously dated. Some of those great historical sims that I've seen look like something blighted that you'd want to have deleted now, if they're old enough. Even disregarding for mesh versus classic prim and every innovation in between, there's the issue of style. Can you image if in 1978 the world decided all the Disco venues were world heritage sites and we basically had 'Club 54' on every block preserved into 2019... (nevermind that some disco aesthetics cycled back into vogue in the 90s... think of this in general terms; senses of style evolve).
  2. Not locked. So the owners of it start to feel special, more deserving than they should, and drama would ensue. That said I'm not sure if this method even exists... this is just my theory on what I suspect would happen...

Not preserving things means that to stay around, a venue has to 'keep up with current tastes'. And I actually think that is to our benefit.

I don't want to see those builds disappear forever either so cloning and putting in storage saves the build in case at some time in the future financial support is sufficient to pay the land fees for a given period of time.

Maybe a way to do this would be to have a rotating area for historic builds, changing quarterly perhaps. Then it could be an interesting place to visit, not lost forever, and would also allow more builds to be saved while keeping operating costs manageable.

I tried suggesting something like this in another thread. It got shot down in flames. I still think it is the best way to go. A small continent, maybe, dedicated to preservation of builds that rotates the builds periodically. Maybe bi-annually rather than quarterly. That would give more opportunity to tour the builds for more people and be easier on the workload of the Moles. Or whoever would be doing the rotating.

I didn't see that, I would have supported you there. It's getting some support here, so please share in it.
