Marketplace and most inworld clothing vendors allow gifting, chose the gift to option from the menu and it will ask for the name of the account you wish to gift it to.

If an item you already own is transferable, you can send it to the person inworld directly.

As for lending, there's absolutely no way you can guarantee that a transferable item will be returned. Whether you get it back or not depends on the other person. If you gift-buy something that is "no transfer", they simply will not ever be able to return it.

Once it's in that person's inventory, they own it and are able to wear it just as they would with something they've purchased for themselves.

About 99% of items you will purchase (or obtain as freebies) in SL are "No Transfer", which means that you cannot sell, give or lend them to anyone else.

However, you can buy things as a gift, and the easiest way to do that is using the Marketplace; instead of clicking "Buy Now", click "Buy as Gift" and it will prompt you for the name of the avatar you're buying it for. Note that you can't lend items this way, because 99% of them are no-transfer, they cannot give the item back to you.

The only items you can lend are ones which are transferable (and usually no-copy). You can give it to someone by opening their chat window and dropping the item from your inventory into the chat-bar in that window.  Or if it's a person who is nearby to you, you can just drag and drop it onto their actual avatar. You can lend them this way, because they remain transferable, so the other person can transfer it back to you when they've finished with it. If they want to. They might not.

how do you know her size though?

Ask her which mesh body she uses (if any), and buy clothes sized for that body. It will always fit, because no matter what she's done with the body sliders, her clothes will stretch or shrink to match.

If she has no mesh body, buy clothes in "Standard sizes" or "Classic" mesh. In this case the clothes do not stretch or shrink to fit the body but there will be 5 or 6 different sizes in the pack and she will wear the one that fits the best.

Really best to ask her to demo. Thwarts the surprise I know, but it helps. She can also look at the overall quality (texture work, make sure the complexity is reasonable) as well as the fit.
