8 years is a long time! Welcome back and be sure to take things one step at a time and some deep breaths because a lot has changed. I think it's different when you've never been in SL before, opposed to someone who has been and left and then returns. I'd say one of the main things that changed (and changed how we look) is that everything is mesh.Β

Land prices have decreased slightly.Β  Abandoned land is everywhere.Β  Prim count is gone and replaced by Land Impact; you can have around 2 to 3 times more stuff on your land as a result.Β  Add to that all the mesh furniture that has replaced prims and you will see even more advantage for land use. Β Β

Player base is stable for the most part but significantly less than what you probably remember.

Many more bones have been added to the avatar skeletons including individual fingers, wings, tails and hind legs.Β  All of this came with project Bento so you will hear that term used a lot.Β

What Rhonda said!Β  In addition to the cost of land going down, Premium membership costs have gone up a bit, as have fees for buying, selling, and transferring $L.Β  We've got Bento for better avatar animation, Animesh for animating other things, Experiences for...well, lots of things, like games, guided tours, more immersive roleplay.Β  With Animesh, non-player characters, animated dolls, are now possible.Β  The newest thing is "Bakes on Mesh", which will allow you to wear old system avatar skins and clothes on mesh avatar bodies.Β  It's just beginning to appear in viewers and products.Β  Improvements are being made to the Windlight environment editor, although I don't think those are fully implemented yet.Β  There's a new metric, "avatar complexity", and you can set your viewer to render avatars that are overly complex and laggy as silhouette "jelly dolls".

AFK sex places have become a thing...meaning you don't have to work at ALL at being an escort, just park your alt and let the customers play with it.Β  Were breedables a thing 8 years ago?Β  These animals, scripted to have a form of artificial life, are bred, raised, and traded among their fans.Β  Ad farms are gone, but the Mainland can still look pretty chaotic.Β  Traffic bots are gone...or at least, prohibited by LL.

LL is rolling out new, larger Linden Homes for Premium members, with 1024 sq m. and 351 prims.Β  They're on the new Bellisseria continent, and there seems to be quite a community spirit among the homeowners there.Β  If you need more prims, there are the Horizons Homes with double prim allowances...though the prices for these parcels are very high, starting at around $L40,000.

Hi all so I have just come back from being away 8 years so I'm here to ask what's changed how's the player base and is the price of land come down at all or anything I need to be aware of iv made myself a new account as I wanted to freshΒ

That's not so unusual.Β  Once upon a time, people kind of a assumed people with old avatars knew a lot about the game.Β  The people that had stuck around in-world tended to be content creators.Β  NowadaysΒ there are a lot of socialites and roleplayers with older accounts.Β Β

I think the biggest change behaviorally, is that many people shop first on SL MarketPlace rather than inworld.Β  Also, the free avatars that Linden Labs provides with the viewer are adequate to get you started.Β Β

The Linden Premium Account is a pretty good deal.Β  The newer homes that come with the Premium Account are quite good, and the older ones are pretty decent.Β  An 2006 account gets a little higher weekly stipend with a Premium Account, and a 2005 account or earlier gets a still-higherΒ Premium Account stipend.Β Β Β You use your older account if you like, obviously, and there is an advantage in Premium Account Stipend if you have a 2006 or earlier account.Β

One thing is when you TP your hair and shoes are no longer placed in the avi's bum for easy transport and convenience!Β Β

True, now your mesh body and clothing all float around you for a minute or so before landing in the correct spots, leaving folks looking a tad odd when they first TP into a location, especially if it is really busy with lots of lag.

You missed the rise and peak of AFK places. But you still can find some residues

It’s a barren wasteland where drama rules the roost, hardly anyone makes original content anymore, needingΒ a year and aeon to learn how to create anything these days, clothing your avatar might take a week providing you buyΒ the correct product for the correct body and hope the creator has got the sizing right, also,Β only us paranoid shut ins remain and the most popular website visited that relates to SL is β€œVirtual Secrets”. Did I miss anything?

Welcome back to Second Life!

Welcome back to Second Life!

A week to clotheΒ your avatar?!

Are you trying to weave the pixel fabric yourself?

Welcome back Steplayz.....one thing you will see coming back is the more things change, the more they are the same.Β  Many of the most popular sims from 8 years ago are still going strong such as Sexy Nude Beach, London City, and Franks Place.Β  You will, however, see that many of your old sims you use to hang out in are gone which is kinda tough.Β  The other thing I noticed coming back after being away for awhile is that the average age of SLers in world seems to be getting older (maybe because we all have aged over the yearsπŸ˜‹).Β  There still is an active international community of users and a great place to learn different languages and cultures still in SL.
