A novel idea for Linden Homes...

I was nostalgically listening to the Sims (1) build music (yes from many moons ago...) vaguely remembering spending hours building and decorating, and I had a thought...what if LL had a type of premium Linden home theme that was essentially a house kit - You would claim your plot (rather than house) via your account as you normally would a house, and when you get there you could get a construction kit folder from an object giver (just like the mail boxes or life preservers currently)  which would contain different wall segements , doors, windows, roofs, fences etc that you put together to build your own home.

The components would only be modifiable in terms of being able to be resized and of course linked (and perhaps being able to change the texture/colour). Maybe there could be even different themes of components. For example mid-century walls, urban walls, country style etc. Or it could be very simple by just having different materials styles and colours e.g. brick, wood.

The covenant would of course be slightly different because each person's house would look different, so there would be less of a requirement to 'keep within theme'. It would however be less random than you'd see on land purchased on the mainland, because there would be limits as to what you can do with the terrain, just as there are certain limits now. But it could be on a different continent so those who don't mind this kind of variety won't upset those who do.

I just thought it would be really fun! So you'd get some land as normal, 512 or 1024, plus the kit, and away you go!

It would be great way for people who want more control over their abode, or  that don't do 3d modelling, to create a more custom style home.  A kit would be easier to put together. Sure, not as flexible as modelling your own home, but a good compromise between that and the set build and look of other Linden home themes.

Maybe it's a daft idea... I'm sure there are some downsides or reasons this might never work (I haven't spent more than a few minutes thinking of this), so feel free to point them out.

One downside is that I would spend waaaay too much time just building, starting over, building again...repeatedly lol.  What do you think?

A great idea!!....... For the mainland.

The Linden Homes, despite the popularity of Bellisseria with folks that have been in SL for many years, ARE considered by the Lindens as starter homes. This is the sort of thing that is a later stage than starter.

I know that building components can be bought on MP, would be great to maybe see packs sold so that this sort of thing could be encouraged.... on the mainland.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I would not want neighbors to have the ability to build a warehouse next door to my beach house. If there was a kit to make add-ons to go WITH the mole-made homes, that would be OK, and would let people tinker a bit. But I'd definitely want the homes themselves to be mole-made. Otherwise, yeah, it's basically Mainland.

I think that's not a downside 🤟

I would totally support an idea like that. It's supposed to be a starter home after all. Giving new Residents a toolkit, a plot, prefab puzzle pieces, and a framework within which to create something that would be pretty good even if it's only their first time is encouraging and enriching.  I love it.

Since the LI of the homes is on LL property, they have to have a way of controlling that and limiting each Home to some specified max.  Trying to create a gazillion tiny parcels just to house each home root prim in order to restrict each person's Home LI would be a nightmare.   Trying to do some sort of back-end programming to handle it would also be a nightmare.

^ I have to agree with this. 👍

As much as I like the concept of building to one's own specifications this idea depends almost entirely on people to be or act reasonably - and everyone has their own independent concept of what reasonable is to them. Code-mess aside it would in all reality create added conflict between residents that so far for the most part in Bellisseria has been avoided. Give people rules they will push them to see how much they can get away with, and I doubt LL would want to impede on Resident's freedom or come across as strict either. Sticking to Mole-built ensures most will do the right thing. If anyone doesn't agree they can utilize mainland. Having a home doesn't begin or end in Bellisseria, it's just a relatively small part of an otherwise very large map with limitless (and less restrictive) possibilities. :)

I could be wrong but this sounds like … prims.

One downside might be that the reason your Linden Home doesn't count against your parcel's available LI is that the root prim is positioned so that it's on protected land owned by LDPW (near your mailbox/life preserver) and the LI counts against LDPW's allowance, not yours.

So for your plan to work, the parcel owners, not LL, would have to carry the LI for the houses.     This might make them a lot less attractive to residents, I think.
