Harvard professor Stephen Pinker in his 2003 book “The Blank Slate” coined the name "euphemism treadmill" for the process whereby words introduced to replace an offensive word, over time become offensive themselves. A current example of this is _______.  Umm, well, that word someone used above.  It was a good word before it became a bad word.

Well, yes.

That's kind of the way language works generally. It's why you don't speak like Shakespeare. Or Chaucer. Or Beowulf.

Although responses to this thread do indicate that the last 400-1000 years didn't happen to some people.
