Why isn't abandonned land just made available straight away?

Whilst exploring SL and seeing all the abandonned land, I don't understand why land is just not put on the market by Linden Labs as soon as it is abandonned by the owner?

Does anyone know the reason?

Thanks

As someone else noted it was done that way in the past. There were problems - people would buy land they couldn't pay tier on in the long term and then abandon it again once they realized that. Meanwhile, with so much available land on the market it hurt the business of people who were holding land to re-sell, so those people stopped holding (and paying tier) on a lot of land.

It's basically to maintain the economy; land prices are already very low and if all available land was immediately re-listed, it would be effectively worthless. This would not only kill mainland sales stone-dead, it would also kill the rental business too. Because who would dream of renting when you could buy a parcel of land for next-to-nothing?

Location, location, location. You want some barren hillside in Corsica, there's about 10  whole sims available.

Corsica makes something very clear. Without water or roads, nobody wants it. Get 100m off a road in the interior of Corsica and you're on abandoned land.

Even though people don't seem to drive much in SL, they want roads. Bellesaria got this right.

As we've seen in Bellessaria, land is (or can be) released immediately.  If it isn't being done on other mainland than there could be an issue with the database that tracks these parcels, or...

Possibly, there's a long term plan to condense or do away with some of the older regions.  Perhaps they want to redesign "old SL" to bring it more in line with the new design concept in Belli.

Having full regions would make this more difficult, but letting attrition lower the land use of these regions would mean impacting less people through relocation or modifying.

Also, the Lab will often split (or join) abandoned parcels to meet the buyer's specifications. Back when whatever was abandoned went to sale as-is, it really only suited land-flippers who'd buy up anything that looked good, make market-sized parcels, then jack up the prices to clear some profit for this service. End-buyers rarely got the savings they can get today by just finding the right abandoned land and asking the Lab to sell them their perfect-sized slice of it.

I like the system as it is. As a first-time buyer for land, it turned out to be more straight forward than it first seemed and we could ask for the land to be parceled to the size and shape we wanted, including the bonus for buying as a group.

We barely looked at land for sale by private owners because it was just too tricky to find the right size.  We weren't overly picky either.

It's to give them a little oversight to prevent abusive land buys. At this point, pretty much anything less than a 1/4 sim is likely to be set for direct sale after filing a ticket. I've done it several times and it's pretty straight forward. In most areas there are parcels of abandoned land to be found so always check before paying any more than 1L/m. If you already own land, check to see if there are small irregular patches of abandoned land around it. LL will almost always sell those to the owner of the parcel they are next to as it makes the land more valuable and desirable if it's ever sold off or abandoned again.
