Blender 2.80 advice

Recommended Posts

I'm converting files made for SL from Blender 2.79 to Blender 2.80. A few questions.

  • Do you now have to set up rendering nodes and all that just to see what your model with textures? Rendering nodes are useless to SL, of course.
  • If you do have to set up rendering nodes, what's the best match to SL? Will Principled BSDF work and match SL reasonably well?
  • What else has to be changed to make an existing file usable in 2.80?

  • Principled BSDF  isn't too bad for what i've seen so far.
  • Layers are gone, existing layers are converted into collections.

The principled shader works pretty well, so long as you're not playing clever games with the alpha channels in your materials. HOWEVER... The place where you're going to have a seriously hard time getting "SL like" display of your materials in blender is specularity. The principled shader is PBR based whereas SL shading is not.The biggest "gap" between them is with the PBR parameters for specularity in the principled shader and the modified phong used by SL.
