Have you ever squatted on someone else's land?

When I started playing SL in like 2008 I set up a headquarters out of prims on I think yumix's land, we had those prim police cars that could fly if you held page up/down at the same time. Went around making a racket and having a blast with a friend for a while like this. Our headquarters was like 12 stories high too, it had one of those scripted elevators that were the fascination of SL at the time.

Great times

Not permanently but before I got my own land, I may occasionally have used "sandboxes" that weren't itnended to be sandboxes.

A friend of mine (no names given and she seems to have left SL anyway) once built an entire store on LL owned no-autoreturn land. She kept it for quite a while too before LL noticed.

My first av and her partner loved to go exploring and anyplace we found that we could do stuff in, we did stuff in. I'm not particularly proud of myself but Hoo Boyo! it was fun.  I called it the Goldilocks syndrome. And yeah, there were a few times when Papa and/or Mama Bear came home and caught us.

A regular public sandbox can be a fairly nice place to rez a skybox home for a few hours. Huge prim allocation. Rarely any visitors. I used to build quietly inside a large skybox for long periods in complete peace and quiet. This was in the years when SL was quite busy too.

I've not squatted on anyone's land but after i purchased a year of Premium membership a couple months ago, I picked up an empty parcel for my allotted 351 prims. Couple days later when I was looking about the parcel I noticed there was 50 or so Li missing though I didn't see anything. After an area search I found a squatters love nest 3000 meters up, complete with bed, chairs, massage table, sex rugs and porn pictures on the walls.

I returned the pictures, skybox exterior and other odds and ends and left the furniture in place, enclosing them with textured prim walls and hung a couple of pictures that I liked on the new interior. I haven't heard anything or noticed the squatter having come back around so think he probably assumed he received it all back and didn't bother to come looking for the rest.

When I have had a chance to shop for some nicer furniture, I'll return the rest with a thank you note for the use of it.

not so much squatting really. Back in the day when lots of then Lindens would leave their Linden Village parcels and Linden staff assigned regions would leave them open to build with no auto-return.  There were a few of us used to do that. Decorate the parcels with homes and landscaping

other thing we used to do was ninja complete somebody's parcel. See a parcel where somebody was struggling with building. Ninja sneak in, build it out. Put everything we made to full perms and Anyone can copy. Next time the  owner logs in, a whole home and everything for them. They go wooo! somebody gave me all this stuff. Then there was also ninja zoo building in the days of mainland adfarms which was a whole other different thing to get into and also quite fun to do

I have ended up a couple of times, When the owner of Trilegy "free land" vanished from SL and stopped doing fortnightly cleans everyone grabbed any prims they could to live on Trilegy until LL cleared the land i think the land had been in Gov Linden ownership some while before it was cleared and when i rented a mall booth on a small shopping area adjoining Freebie Dungeon. The owner of the land couldn't pay tier got banned from SL their land remained active for years until LL cleared it

A long time ago I found one of those disused sims with build left open to anyone.  I did have land of my own at the time but here I made a bigger place, up in the sky.  It was there for some time but eventually the owner (or maybe Governor Linden) cleared everything away.

I also used to put stalls selling my stuff on other people's (disused) land and I probably made a few extra L$ from that.  But I don't do that now, not least because it's more difficult to find disused land with build left on.

A few of the groups that I belong to allow residents to set home to the group location and allow group members to build.  Back in my early days, a few times when I was between homes, I would rez a small skybox or platform high in the sky on group land and set home there.  I  did it 3 or 4 times and never stayed longer than a week, all while I was figuring out where I wanted to live at the time.

Yes, for most of my early SL 😎 Loads of people did it then - it wasn't hard to find vacant regions with perms left on. Or even sims with regularly logged-in owners oblivious to the squatters living 2,500m above ground.

It usually fell apart when friends of friends of friends heard about the place and decided to 'move in' and clutter it with their high-prim tat. Which, to the owner, is probably poetic justice. You can hardly boot someone for griefing your skybox when you're not meant to be there yourself.

I also liked the Hobo sims, you could pretty much 'live', work and build there without paying a linden. But my experience of public sandboxes is very different to Bree's - can't remember the chance to 'build quietly', they were like flipping warzones...or at least the ones I went to 😲

OMG I'm not the only one. I think that's why I'm so paranoid about who's on my land when I'm not around. I remember what kind of mischief I got up to!
