Profile Pick got me banned

Recommended Posts

I made a Pick in my profile and set it to be seen by Friends Only.

A man who was not a friend made a comment about it and I checked the setting again and it was Friends Only. I changed it, then changed it back again to hope it would be ok.

I got banned later from a sim because the Pick was a adult location.

It should have be private from people who are not friends. I delete it now because I do not want this problem again. I do not trust any more the privacy settings in my profile, it is not safe.

I use Firestorm 6.0.2

I'll be honest if places be banning you over your picks. I doubt very many are going there anyway.

nonsense, it's totally OK to keep people with adult profiles out of your place/region
I have nothing against nudity and sexuality, but when somebody jumps in my region with the meat slapping in my face from every profile page, it's out and gone.

If it's something where I can decide to restrict it or make it public, I assume it's public even if I restrict it. It's not that unlikely that the privacy options will go wrong at some point and everyone will see it. Don't trust this sort of option to protect sensitive information.

But in this case, I'm pretty sure those options are only for the web, not inworld. You can hide certain groups from your profile inworld, but not picks as far as I'm aware. Picks are where you tell everyone about the places you like to go... and there are some things you probably don't want to tell everyone.

That is what picks are supposed to be - sadly SL users abuse them for everything else and actually wonder if you really have some.

The reason picks get used for information more than as actual picks is because profiles don't support nearly enough text to give all that info you might want to.

As for locations that ban you for utterly trivial reasons, they are universally not worth visiting.

totally depends..
in general you don't visit a family beach in full sm atire..as you also dont visit church with a p-a visibly hanging out of the front of your pants...
If i like to see those things i go to the designated places, not the grocery store.

Monitoring how people do their picks is too extreme if they're only visiting a sim. Not many are going to hide this "pick" you dislike.

Although, the Viewer should provide Adult Region Picks only to be viewed by people WISHING to access/view that kind of content. So people could just keep their viewer set to General if not wanting to see Moderate/Adult region picks.

I never came across any setting that made me chose if a pick should be private or not. Maybe that feature isn't supported in all viewers _or_ its not supported in some profile format (like old format vs. webformat)? Maybe someone with more technical insight can explain that.

But other than that...a place, where the people in charge have the dedication and time to snoop around otherwise conforming peoples profiles, to find the slightest bit of "dirt" to then ban said person over it, is not a place worth being at. Unless you like drama, because that stinks of a drama breeding ground.

Apples and oranges.

If I go to a sim, with private parts out or in a BDSM outfit and it clearly doesn't fit the place, I'm most likely being ignorant on purpose and I probably ignore a few clearly stated rules at the entrance of the place. In that case, I'm there to offend and I know it. And anyone looking in my direction will be confronted with my apperance, no matter how much they might mind their own business. Anyone who wants to be at the church or the family beach and wants to be polite and fit in...will change their avatar to be dressed appropiate. Doing that or requesting that is very resonable.

But a single pick in someones profile is not directly in your face. Its not dressing in sm gear or putting out your private parts. Someone has to open your profile and click through it. And its also probably not a stated rule, that is obvious to anyone entering the sim. Banning someone because they have a non-pg pick in their profile, is assuming the right to ban someone based on what they do elsewhere, outside the sim. Thats like banning someone from a supermarket, because they are there with their wife and children and you know now that they at sex at some point.

I'm aware that anyone can ban anyone for whatever reason, but it does stroke me as one of the more unreasonable bans and I wouldn't be suprised, if there is a personal motive behind it.

My experience has been that when I put up a parcel to let I get a fair number of visitors with images so explicit I want to puke.  The region is Moderate - why would they imagine they'd be welcome?  I do check visitor Profiles for the sake of keeping my residents safe from griefers but I don't ban the pukesome on one visit - if they return,  having understood what's expected, then yes they get banned.

Profiles are supposed to be general... picks are a part of your profile - simple as that.

You can get banned for any reason, or no reason. Don’t sweat it too much.

With an imagination like that, you don’t need much help to find offense!

It's not (as far as I'm aware) in the viewer preferences - it's a 'My Second Life' privacy setting you access from the Second Life website (via the dashboard) at https://my.secondlife.com/settings/privacy

You can set it to be viewed by 'Everyone', 'Second Life' or 'Friends'.

I looked up the OP using Firestorm 'legacy' profiles, and the Picks tab says 'user has no pics', so either they removed them all or the setting does work on legacy profiles. On web profiles the tab just doesn't exist for those people Picks are hidden from.

I once got banned from a club for saying the place was full of the wildest animals in SL.

/me shrugs

Sux getting banned from a sim; but... it's really only just 1 sim. And if they're really that picky about, erm, a Pick, then who needs 'em anyway, right?!

You bring up a good question, though: is traveling to a sim with a 'wrong' pick in your profile, really a good reason to ban someone? Yes, ppl can ban you for whatever reason, and their rules, and yada, yada, yada; but is it fair? I think it's probably a bit over-the-top, tbh. And I'm sorry it happened to you.

What's fair is what the region owner decides.  They pay for it, and LL supports their decisions (barring TOS-breaking and illegality!).

I'd want to make what I think is an important distinction here, Garnet.

That the region owner has the ability and the "right" to ban people for whatever reason they want (barring TOS-breaking etc.) is inarguable, but part of the point of having that power is that they don't need to be "fair" about how they employ it. They aren't entrusted by LL, as a local magistrate might be, with upholding "fairness" on their sims. On the contrary, they have the power to be as arbitrary and unfair as they want. THAT is what they are paying for, in part. Legalities and ethics are not the same thing.

So, we can all agree that you can be banned for any reason. But it doesn't follow that we have to agree with those decisions. Ban me if you wish: I reserve to myself the right to call you a jerk for doing so.

That setting is for web profiles only. It doesn't affect legacy profiles which are still available in FS. So yes that image can be seen on your profile inworld.

Best rule of thumb is, if you don't want it seen, don't post it.

Adult location or content? Location shouldn't be a problem but region owners can ban who they want for no reason.

ETA: If the image wasn't a "G rated" image, it shouldn't be on either profile as it is a violation of the ToS. All those profiles you see with nudity and sex in them... are violations of the ToS and should be ARed.
