It depends on what you have done so far.  If I understand correctly, you have already bought a parcel of land somewhere.  It's a 4096 sq m parcel, so you are expecting to pay Linden Lab $22/month inland use fees for it, because you bought it on the Mainland.

If that's the case. all you have to do is sit back and relax.  You own the land.  Linden Lab will bill your account monthly and will collect from its USD balance (if there is cash there already) or will bill your credit card or PayPal account.  If I am correct and you have bought on the Mainland, that means you must be a Premium member.  Thus, Linden Lab will automatically credit you with the land fee waiver of $7.00 a month for the first 1024 sq m that you own, leaving you with a bill for $14.

If I have misunderstood and you are not a Premium member of SL, then you must not have bought the parcel on the mainland.  In that case, you will not pay Linden Lab land fees at all.  Instead, you will pay monthly fees (rent) to the person who owns the region that you are on.  The amount you pay will be whatever you agreed to when you bought the parcel from her/him.

Of course, I may have really misunderstood, and you have not bought any land yet at all.  If so, then the stuff I just said still applies, but it's in your future until you buy land somewhere.

The best course for you now is to start reading articles under the LAND category in the Knowledge Base (link at the top of this page) and then plan on taking Lindal Kidd's free class on land ownership and management in Saturday noon at Caledon Oxbridge University, in world.  She knows everything:)

First off, here is the Knowledge Base article on Buying Land :

Bullet points:

If you are buying MAINLAND you need to first be a premium member

If you are buying PRIVATE ESTATE land you do not need to be a premium member and the tier (payment levels) may be different that the chart Rolig pasted in.

Your post makes is sounds like you either already bought a 4096 lot (or a pieces smaller than that as the monthly fees go up in "hunks") OR you are wanting to buy. Rolig already gave you a lot of info.

I guess the the most IMPORTANT thing I can suggest is to wait a bit if you haven't already purchased as there is a LOT to know about it. There are classes you can take and it would be really smart to know what you are doing before doing it LOL.

You can also RENT land (often cheaper) with no need to be a premium member. That's an option too.

There are two kinds of land in SL...Mainland and Private Estates.  Since you are talking about paying LL $22 per month, you're talking about Mainland.

  • You have to be a Premium member to own Mainland
  • Before you start paying that $22 per month in tier fees, you have to first find, and buy, the land.  You can use the Map and check "for sale" in the legend to see parcels for sale.  You can use Search/Land and Rentals/View All Land and Rentals to find parcels for sale.  You can also click the Auctions link under the "Land" menu item here on the website, to see parcels for auction.
  • Once you buy the land, your tier level will be increased automatically to pay the monthly upkeep.
    • You get the first 1024 sq m. free of tier, as a benefit of your Premium membership.  So, for example, you could buy a 2048 sq m. parcel, and you would only pay tier on 1024 sq m, or $7.00 per month.  This benefit doesn't help much with a 4096 sq m parcel, because it's not enough to get you down to the next lower tier level.  But you can use it to buy MORE than 4096 without paying more tier.  You could buy 4096+1024 = 5120 sq m. and pay $22 per month.

I teach a class on Second Life land on Saturdays, at 12 noon SL Time, at Caledon Oxbridge University.  It's free to attend!  Maybe I'll see you there tomorrow.

I never was a premium member and ive owned main land for over years time in Bagat sim. but my sim is broken and no one can get in it this very well upsets me. It would be nice to see if anyone can come by and discover what is wrong with my sim.

Submit a support case, using the selection Region/Estate and requesting a region restart.  You don't even have to be a landowner in the region to make that request, if it's a mainland region.  In my experience, Linden Lab acts on restart requests very quickly -- within a half hour usually, although it can take longer in the middle of the night or on the weekend.
