Adult content, or not adult?

Not sure how it works 'abroad', but here, they hand out free condoms to teens to make sure that they can have protected sex (they're going to do it anyway, so it's better not risking them getting STDs or teenage pregnancies). So... Condoms handed out in a G-rated region, why not?

You also find there is no age check to buying condoms here. I know I could buy condoms when I was 13 at any store. Maybe things are different in the land of the free and its a cultural thing

They really should consider changing the line to "the land of the incarcerated" ... And sure, I get that it can be perceived as promoting teenagers getting down and dirty, but teenagers are teenagers, they tend to be curious about each other; personally I think it's better to educate them, and offer them protection rather than shaming them for following instinct.

If a person has not yet reached an age at which they can reasonably be expected to have been introduced to a condom, they probably shouldn't be in SL. In the end it's up to LL to decide whether or not it might be appropriate for their platform (and considering the pressure from external legal implications for them, I wouldn't blame them if  they chose the "better safe than sorry" approach to this one - a legal condom, so to speak!).

this is actually a really huge issue

How yuge? Like 'I found a used condom in a G area once' huge? Because that's what I was able to distill from all these words.

In “real life”, children will come across disturbing things like used condoms, discarded pornography, used hypodermic needles, discarded liquor bottles, you name it.

Is this means of birthcontrol actually an object one can wear or is it, like stated previously, merely graphical litter of the fishing rod game ?

Not that it' s less distasteful, but wondering about the implication of any unnoticing 'child' -avatar collecting it for .. purposes ( atlhough quite frankly the usage of such in SL goes beyond me ).

No it never goes to inventory.  There is a particular fish called a shiny that you can catch which I haven't yet and I've been playing for two days but it gives an instant prize.  What those are isn't listed but I was given an example of some of things others have won and it's like jewelry or a fishing chair things like that.    The fish and the what the original posters calling booby prizes are on your screen for about 5 seconds and you can click them away or they eventually go away on their own but no they don't show up in inventory like a  7seas catch does.  It also does not appear on your line either so it doesn't appear in world.

So, it' s an object and it can be worn ?

If so, I find, it should be excluded from the prizes asap or at least impossible to win outside the A-areas.

Sorry .. should read more intensively.

/me stumbles to the kitchen for coffee.

i have thought about this since it was first brought up and while in incredibly poor taste on the games creators part, there is nothing inherently "adult" about a condom. I am not even sure a child avatar simply holing a condom violates terms of service, and certainly receiving one in inventory does not, and having an award tier called that doesn't at all. I think this is more of awareness and a vote with your dollars campaign to get the game designer to remove their exceedingly poor attempt at humor from the game. I was was on the fence but thinking about playing the game yesterday, until I heard this and have decided for sure I won't be joining in the fun this round.

True, under certain circumstances, but that does not make it a good thing and those circumstances are not good ones for children to be in so they would be taken. But that is the Real world, not SL.

It makes sense that some people would like SL to be cleaner, safer, less gross than RL.

I enjoy the events by this company and have been doing this one, but they didn't handle this well. The two options would either have been to mark the event as moderate or to remove the item. What's actually happened is a strange rebranding of condoms as a child-friendly item, which has no connection to sex at all, and would certainly be a suitable item for decorating your child's bedroom. Obviously, it was used in a completely non-sexual way, such as a water balloon or a novelty cress planter.

The issue being that general land owners could be reported for it and the report would be valid. General rules on content are strict.

Outside of the rules, there's also the spirit of the rules. It's not wrong for people to want to control the content they experience. It's not that adults don't know what stuff is, but they might not want to keep seeing that stuff or just not right at this moment. It shouldn't really need to be said that if someone is avoiding sexual content, they most likely also don't want to be handed a used condom, a sex toy, an educational book about sex, or anything else like that. Not because there's anything wrong with such items, but that's not the content they want.

All round, I get the impression that nobody involved had really thought about it, so they got defensive and came out with the first thing that came to mind. Which was that condoms are a general-rated item, the same as a teddy bear or a cupcake.

But there’s no husky/wolf hairs or wet kisses in SL!

Decorate a child's bedroom with something that can be a danger to them? I don't think so.

I don't have any issues with condoms but these are "used condoms" and that's just nasty.

The nastiness does seem like something the maturity ratings were intended to help people avoid. A more predictable experience and all that. But I'm not sure it exactly qualifies under any of the "adult content" criteria. And adult content has no monopoly on nasty surprises. So I kinda think this one is all on the game creator and their (lack of) taste.

(It's not about underage users, but if it were: Meh. Could be worse. Could be a gun. Those should really be kept behind the counter.)

I just checked the MP, setting my Maturity level to General, and searched for 'condom'. Guess what?  Found quite a few.  Thus they are considered General items.

I just performed the same search unaltered since you made it suit your narrative, "used condom" (which is the whole topic, not condoms themselves) brought zero results until I reached adult maturity rating. They are adult!

Well, EXCUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSE me.  I was not 'suiting my narrative' - it just didn't dawn on me that used ones would be flagged differently.

Geez, I just love how some people always ASSume the worst of others - ASSuming there is something nefarious behind their actions.

You're the one trying to downplay the issue here, you were trying to push a narrative whether you call it that or not! The fact stands that adult content is all over second life even on general regions, because of the foolish decision made by a company who thought they could redefine what was and wasn't acceptable on a broad scale. You've actually helped prove my point that nobody even dares list a used condom as anything less than adult, so thank you for that.

No, I was simply making a statement based on a simple search.

You chose to turn it in to much more than it was.

You were making a search based solely on part of the topic, and saying the general consensus of what nearly everyone was saying in here, was misguided based solely on that. Whether intended or not, it was making a case to the contrary.

No - I made a quick simple search and provided an answer based on a question that you asked.  It truly was as simple as that.
