Nalates Urriah Posted July 14, 2019 Share Posted July 14, 2019 Naw.... just pelt them with facts that upset them, quote sources they can't refute, upset their cherished beliefs, use the latest PC buzzwords and phrases to describe their words and actions, hold a mirror up for them to bounce off of... they will block you. 😈🤣 People get out of line and are often insensitive. In those situation they seldom think. Others respond to what they say as if they are rational humans. Then being overwhelmed with the absurdity or stupidity of the comments coming out of them, surrender and just block/mute them. It is fine to do that. No one has a duty to listen to a rude uninformed idiot. One just has to make sure they know who is uninformed and who is being an idiot. Some are into virtue signalling. Grind on that if they are being annoying. Others try so hard to be PC. It usually only takes a couple of comments to have them raving. So... if you are into chaos, as a few in SL are, have fun with it. You might actually cause someone to think. The block button is always just a mouse click away. So, while there are all these other courses of action, you ARE ENTITLED to click block/mute at any time for any reason. It is the Freedom of Association which is part of Free Speech rights. You can block anyone at any time for any reason... but that doesn't mean that you're free of the consequences for blocking someone. Blocking a creator or their sales rep can hurt your ability to do business with them. Blocking the owner or moderator of an inworld group or sim interferes with their job, and can potentially see you ejected. Blocking people nearby or in a group chat can make conversation nearly impossible, as you'd be talking over someone without even realising it. And no one wants to be that idiot that sits on occupied furniture because your trigger happy block finger has hidden them from view. More importantly, even if none of these apply at the time of blocking, circumstances change and these issues could pop up years after blocking someone. And while these downsides are unlikely to seriously impact you, they're more like annoyances than anything else; but it's still something to weigh up against the benefits of blocking someone, as the block may do more harm than good. That's a personal decision that no one else can make for you. So yeah, while you can block anyone for any reason... I'd suggest taking a second to consider if it's actually necessary. If someone pushes my button(s) hard enough for me to want to block them, they deserve it and I want nothing further to do with them or their business. I will take my business elsewhere as I do in RL. Together with blocking.. nearly always derender them. In that case they are able to communicate after a few days again, but i'll know what happened before for the most worse ones i make a note at the profile. The ignore settings on the forums are so useless, not using that really a lot, also a few days and in fact only for myself to cool down, for the hardliners a bit longer. I don't think I've ever blocked a person. Part of that is due to my particular brand of neurosis: I'd much rather know that I can see what someone is saying than not -- even if I don't actually look. And as for generic annoying chat spam and such, it's easiest just to ignore. That said, I can totally understand why some people might want to block other avatars, particularly in cases where what is being said is causing real emotional distress or anxiety. So, as Rolig says, YMMV. Certainly, the choice to block or not is not an ethical issue. These are the ones I usually block. So bad they still can see me, we could just be 100% invisible to blocked people, like any social media. Block and goodbye forever.
