When is it ok to block people?

Naw.... just pelt them with facts that upset them, quote sources they can't refute, upset their cherished beliefs, use the latest PC buzzwords and phrases to describe their words and actions,  hold a mirror up for them to bounce off of... they will block you😈🤣

People get out of line and are often insensitive. In those situation they seldom think. Others respond to what they say as if they are rational humans. Then being overwhelmed with the absurdity or stupidity of the comments coming out of them, surrender and just block/mute them. It is fine to do that. No one has a duty to listen to a rude uninformed idiot. One just has to make sure they know who is uninformed and who is being an idiot.

Some are into virtue signalling. Grind on that if they are being annoying.

Others try so hard to be PC. It usually only takes a couple of comments to have them raving.

So... if you are into chaos, as a few in SL are, have fun with it. You might actually cause someone to think.

The block button is always just a mouse click away. So, while there are all these other courses of action, you ARE ENTITLED to click block/mute at any time for any reason. It is the Freedom of Association which is part of Free Speech rights.

Whenever you feel like it? I mean... why ... not?

That was going to be my reply. :)

Being forced to tolerate someone's presence near you, inworld or in chat even, is a tricky proposition in these days of the #metoo era. :) No, seriously, if I do not want to have to deal with someone pushing themselves onto me (verbally or otherwise), I absolutely reserve the right to block them! I rarely, do, though; but that's another matter.

The last person I blocked was at a public meeting; I couldn't concentrate on the important things being said because this person in the audience wouldn't shut up.  Other than that I block people who scream at me or are horribly rude (fortunately few), or subscribing mechanisms that give me no way to remove myself from the list.

Time to be contrary to the overall mood of the thread.

You can block anyone at any time for any reason... but that doesn't mean that you're free of the consequences for blocking someone.

Blocking a creator or their sales rep can hurt your ability to do business with them. Blocking the owner or moderator of an inworld group or sim interferes with their job, and can potentially see you ejected. Blocking people nearby or in a group chat can make conversation nearly impossible, as you'd be talking over someone without even realising it. And no one wants to be that idiot that sits on occupied furniture because your trigger happy block finger has hidden them from view.

More importantly, even if none of these apply at the time of blocking, circumstances change and these issues could pop up years after blocking someone. And while these downsides are unlikely to seriously impact you, they're more like annoyances than anything else; but it's still something to weigh up against the benefits of blocking someone, as the block may do more harm than good. That's a personal decision that no one else can make for you.

So yeah, while you can block anyone for any reason... I'd suggest taking a second to consider if it's actually necessary. It might well be... but it probably isn't.

If I block a creator and/or that creator's rep, I won't be doing business with that creator. That is set in stone.

If someone pushes my button(s) hard enough for me to want to block them, they deserve it and I want nothing further to do with them or their business. I will take my business elsewhere as I do in RL.

In my case, not blocking them will do more harm than good.

I don't think you'll find all that many ppl outright disagreeing with you. But the topic, of course, wasn't "Is it wise to block people?", but "When is it ok to block people?" And the answer to the latter, I feel, must invariably be: "Always."

Think of a “block” as sort of an achievement award.

If someone is working hard to be annoying; recognize their hard work and commitment with a well-earned Block.

You’re telling them that their work on you is complete and that they are now free to pursue their Art on fresh canvas........

...alternately a “GTFO” works too.....

my name might pop up at several lists, and no i don't wonder why  :)
Personally i don't have that many blocked permanently inworld, mostly annoying subscriber objects and a few questionable escort services ( who think their marketing should be pointed at members of gay groups for some reason... )

I do however block regulary.. but after a few days remove them, as soon they got the autoresponse  once they'll know it's useless anyway.
Together with blocking.. nearly always derender them. In that case they are able to communicate after a few days again, but i'll know what happened before :) for the most worse ones i make a note at the profile.

The ignore settings on the forums are so useless, not using that really a lot, also a few days and in fact only for myself to cool down, for the hardliners a bit longer.

in my case I don't use the forums Ignore function on anyone

i mean that inworld I use the Ignore capability in my head.  Get some random chat/IM inworld and is all a bit meh!  then I ignore it and don't reply

i only block automated subscribo and bot services that send me adverts for which I never signed up for

Same here.  I have certainly blocked a couple of annoying shops that keep sending spam messages despite the fact that I never joined a group, and I have blocked chatty furniture a few times. Other than that, I've never felt a need to block a person.  For me, it's easier to simply ignore and walk away. YMMV, of course.

Pretty much my practice too. My block list consists of 8 objects. I don't think I've ever blocked a person.

Part of that is due to my particular brand of neurosis: I'd much rather know that I can see what someone is saying than not -- even if I don't actually look. And as for generic annoying chat spam and such, it's easiest just to ignore.

That said, I can totally understand why some people might want to block other avatars, particularly in cases where what is being said is causing real emotional distress or anxiety. So, as Rolig says, YMMV.

Certainly, the choice to block or not is not an ethical issue. It's a tool available for those who need or want it, and they are the only proper arbiters of whether it is appropriate or not.

I'm often into ahn.... adult sims, and a lot of guys read my profile and pretend to be the kind of person I like to interact - just to later become a pain in the *** revealing their real personalities. These are the ones I usually block. So bad they still can see me, we could just be 100% invisible to blocked people, like any social media. Block and goodbye forever.

But I agree with the general opinion: there's no reason to justify a block.

Sure there is. Or was I supposed to just let my stalker abusive ex stalk me in SL as well as RL?

Read their entire post: They're saying there is no reason for you to have to justify blocking another person - not that there is never a reason which justifies a block.
