So tired of opening boxes

I've made my way through two SL16B shopping Sims and I have repeatedly been opening a folder, wearing a box, accepting the contents given, detaching the box and deleting the folder. Wash, rinse, repeat. I wish there was a macro to do this all for me.

On a positive note, I can easily log into the sims to the north and south of the shopping sims and just cam through all the stores.

The entire unpacking system is a mess because of various scripts and rezzing methods over time, and they all overlap each other.  Perhaps some older SL'ers can explain why things need to be boxed in the first place.  The entire process would be much easier if everything were placed in folders.

I pass up a lot of gifts just because of all the opening of boxes  that I know I'll have to do later..

It's kind of like seeing money on the ground..

Is there enough there to really warrant bending over to pick it up?

Seriously though,it's not really a lazy thing for me..It's more from feeling like,Do I need more stuff than I already have?

I've got a lot of really nice stuff already hehehehe

Aside from these being free gifts, though, since we're on the subject and it's usually demos we're unboxing for items we really will pay for, WHY do creators not put in the name if it's boxed or a HUD that we have to wear to unpack?? And why do we need either, really? Just gimme a folder with the stuff in it. If it's an event, I run through and grab all the demos of things I might want and it really gets freaking irritating having to add this, rez that, unpack this, detach that... seriously, it doesn't need to be that fancy. A folder is GREAT and functional and easy.

Also, if your demo has a floating alpha thingie orbiting around my body with your logo on it, I can't freaking see the item I might want to pay money for. If I can't see it, I'm not gonna buy it.

And my final gripe... I know my alphabet. I know how to sort by most recent. I know how to find something I just bought in my inventory. I have a mild case of OCD. I do not need you to surround the name of your item in ~!#$%^&*()_+{}][|><? or any other symbols. The alphabet works fine. I am unhinged just enough to have to rename everything before I can try on the first demo. You guys can stop doing that symbol thingie, for realsies.

Yes, I am forcing myself to open all the birthday gifts, why do you ask?

SOME of us have always given out things in folders. My only exception is for gacha sets that have to be boxed as you can only give out ONE item (not folders).  I also hate opening boxes and really appreciate the folder aspects (this mostly on blogger packs).

This honestly (almost literally) gives me an eye twitch! I'm pretty sure this is a conscious decision by creators to 'bump' their objects to the top of the folder in your inventory, as in to be seen first before you even get to the A's, B's, or C's... I mean let's face it, by the time most of us get to around C in our inventory our attention is starting to drift anyway. So by adding a * to the name your item gets bumped straight to the top of the list. I don't like it, and if it irks me enough I'll rename. Or I'll drop all the ones starting with a symbol in a separate folder on their own so I CAN read my ABCs with less of an eye twitch... (with everything in that symbol folder to never to be looked at again).

It could be worse. At least they've realised that it's no longer 2008 and do actually include an unpacker script.

This was one if the most difficult concepts to grasp as a newbie. Not far behind appliers in fact.

I really struggled at the start, but most of my early buys were of the drag to the ground in a sandbox variety, so once I understood the sandbox concept I was Ok for a while.

Then I came across the touch to unpack thing, which threw me, and then the double boxed, for which I had to get help. I rarely come across drag to the ground items nowadays, but just occasionally I have to jump to a sandbox. Thats always annoying when I happen to be naked.......

Free gifts? I'm not that fussed usually. Very few of my outfits have anything which was free. I do take group gifts, but I'm such a picky shopper, that they rarely float my boat. But just one or two have been right up my street. 😊

That can't be universal behavior though.  I have a vendor box that gives out a bunch of things as class handouts, and it gives them in a folder.

If you drag a folder to a prim, the entire contents of the folder and all sub folders are flattened. It's impossible to have a script recreate that folder tree (or any folder tree) **

** There is a way to do this with RLVa, but that's not really suited for general purpose use.

You can give multiple folders with a variety of contents but not control where they end up in the target inventory, but that's less useful (and why some products contain boxes of boxes, just to get around this).

Again, back to wanting a standard 'magic' package from LL .. a dedicated 'packaging' prim with special abilities and restrictions.

  • A fixed mesh asset that people can create in world like a prim.
  • Only the creator can add to it's contents.
  • Creator sets unpack modes (dependent on containing perms) - Rez, Wear or Direct (where you can right click and open it like a zip file)
  • Wear to unpack goes onto a dedicated editable hud slot, never on hand or head.
  • Limited customization, re-texture it, set name and desc.
  • Add a folder tree and have that whole tree preserved and it's contents.
  • Scripts do not run.
  • Different inventory icon(s).
  • Ability to create a package completely from script.
  • Ability to create a package from an SLM listing (even delisted)
  • Ability to create a package that references a SLM listing and will always unpack the latest version.
  • and so on.

Quick, easy painless for everyone, predictable and secure.

I prefer folder delivery and used to only do folder delivery until I got a new vendor system and decided to participate in a popular event where people like to cam shop from outside the region proper. This caused all kinds of headaches as the vendor system doesn't like, or won't, deliver folders to outside the region. So, I've gone to having everything delivered from the server in boxed format. I have packaged most of my products into attachable HUDs that auto-unpack, but I've seen complaints about those too in the forums. Basically we can't win for loosing no matter what we do. :(

I'll be the unpopular one here... I really dont mind the boxes so much... yes folders are best... the only thing I wish is that content creators would NOT add animations to their boxes...

Most of the time when I'm unboxing clothing I'm sitting on a pose stand... that animation BREAKS my pose stand everytime... then I gotta stand and resit.

Folder is best... box is fine... auto-unpack even better... Animated Box ----> STOP IT

Very well said. My thoughts exactly! :)

Also, animated box, erm, why again?! Just clicking on it, to unpack, should suffice. No need to start an animation for a box you're about to delete (or will auto-delete itself) a few seconds later.

I think boxes are used for the vending delivery system that most creators use. The box opening problem isn't much of an issue until you have to open a ton of boxes from each slb shopping sim.

I've found a new trend to kvetch about... timers on demos. I was admiring this new dress and boop! It disappeared! Then I fumbled about trying to see the demo again but it kept disappearing. It's a little annoying.

I'm with you Beth.  I always rename my landmarks sans  the cutesy pie *!@#~ stuff that  people use to get to the top of the sort.  I rename my folders too; usually with the main color so I can find things by color.

Speaking of which . . .

Don't you just hate it when you're shopping at SL16B and grabbing all of the free gifts but you feel guilty if you take the gift without grabbing at least one demo, because you don't want the merchant to think that you're some kind of deadbeat freeloader (because you KNOW they check, right?) and then you get all of the demos home and decide you might just as well try some of them on and it turns out you really like one but of course you have NO idea which sim the store was in or where it was?
