This assumes you are talking about a current old version Linden Home:  Click the land itself or the name of the property at the top of the window.  That should bring up your About Land window.  Click Abandon -- don't forget to pick up all your stuff first.

If you actually own Mainland, go to the land and either Abandon it (see above) or set it to sell and wait.

Hi.  Go to the 'About Land' Dialogue in your Second Life while you are in your home.  I suggest going to the 'Objects' tab in the dialog and select 'Return' which will take all your own items out of the parcel and package them.  Then go back to the 'General' tab in the dialogue and click 'Abandon Land'. The Land will go back into general circulation.  The package of all your items you will have to extract at a public sandbox (all in the same relative position they were in when you packaged them).  Their, you go through and grab them one by one back into your inventory and then when you acquire a new parcel, you will have them available.

While using the Object tab to "Return" all items, if you have any "no copy" items, then I HIGHLY suggest that you manually pick them up -- either individually or as part of a group of objects.

No copy items have been known to disappear when returned via the Objects tab.

It's always advised to just pick up your stuffz, instead of letting the system return them to you. It used to be (but never had things returned to me en masse, in years), that you would get everything sent you in one huge coalesced 'ball', that may or may not be working properly any more, thereafter. When I recently ran out of prim on my Bellissaria plot (whilst unlinking a part), I got the single linkset returned to me (intact). So, who knows? But why do it the messy way, right?!
