Can anyone direct me to a "base mesh" avatar for reference?

Hi folks - I'm new to creating for SL and was wondering if there are base mesh/avatars that are the standard reference for creating clothes, accessories, etc. I haven't found anything that seems current, in my searches.

Also, what are the units in SL that I would set my 3D package to? Meters?

Thank you!

Is there something better than that article?

The raw files seem to be here. If you pick the latest one there of the multiple versions available, you're probably OK.

Robin Wood has some useful UV layouts for making clothing, and other resources for getting started.

I think most clothing creators just buy Avastar, which apparently comes with the necessary files. I don't have it, so I can't comment further.

There are several competing brands of avatar skins, in addition to the default Linden Labs ones - Belliza, Slink, etc. I'm not sure how you get started with them.

All dimensions in SL are in meters.

(I've been working on clothing for animesh, which is slightly different from regular clothing,  and the regular tools don't do animesh yet. So I had to go looking around for the low-level assets. That's not how most clothing in SL is made, as I understand it. Someone who's more into avatar clothing should answer this.)

Hey animats, thank you very much. I appreciate it.

The scale issue depends from the software you're using. Blender and 3dsmax default to meters and they should stay so, Maya instead requires centimeters scene units. For Maya there is MayaStar plug in that comes with all the necessary files, for 3dsmax there is Marrionette by polysail. Mayastar can be found on the marketplace, Marionette can be purchased by asking the creator
