What do you use your alts for?

 I use mine for posemaking, photography, listening to music at my SL home when I'm AFK so that people don't think I'm being rude by not responding to them on my regular avatar, and being a co-owner of groups just in case I mess up and leave one by accident. Or sometimes I'll just use one to roam around and have some alone-time while enjoying the beauty of SL.

For the new Linden Homes, I got a nice location. Too nice to give it up, but I used an alt for "fishing" on the homes site to see if something better came up. Catch and release. Of course that alt had to be premium for it to work. I think I can afford to have 1-2 alts, so I can try out new Linden homes in the future.

I can keep the home I like best, use another home a short period, abandon it, try a new style, or just go back using the alt fishing for a perfect place on Bellisseria.

1 alt.  I build motor vehicles (primarily motorcycles) & for the 1st year it seemed a silly notion for me to maintain another account of any kind. However as business grew the advantages become obvious & now she's my:

* crash test dummy

* permission tester

* animation tester

* back-up warehouse storage for original creations

* land group co-owner

* banker

* pose creation (she also has an extra male outfit for sizing larger vehicles for guys & the girls with really large avatars).

 She's basically an unpaid employee that never complains.  Poor thing has hardly any clothes to wear, is usually barefoot & hasn't let the sim in years. I finally gave in and converted her to mesh because I really couldn't stand to look at her.  Now she pretty much looks like me in RL which only I know. In her male sized outfit, 'he' is still a classic avatar with layer clothes & while he's really hard to look at for any length of time, he gets the job done with vehicle sizing & pose creations. My best male friend in SL finds it rather disturbing to see him working & gives me good natured grief all the time about him, which is pretty humorous to say the least.

How long is the Linden Home waiting list now? 10 years?

With Auto-refresh, they get it soon-ish, in a matter of days.

The second post here is from one who had been trying 1 month, but after installing Auto-refresh she succeeded.

It's been years since I used an alt. I used it for reasons similar to what others here have posted. It was used mostly for practicing texture applying, such as tattoos. I should point out this was before I went all mesh and was utilizing a standard issued avatar from SL.

Now that I have gone all mesh, I lost interest in continuing tat practices. Maybe someday, I'll pick it back up.

Beth Macbain is technically an alt. I made her about a year after my original because I wanted an avatar with my real first name. My original is now one of the Bellisseria cats.

I created one alt years ago to cheat on my partner. It was a disaster and I felt like such a piece of absolute crap that I 'fessed up after like 3 days and have never pulled anything like that again. Because of that, and because I know so many others do things just as devious and despicable with their alts, I have always been leery of anyone with a bunch of alts and even though it's fun to create a new avatar from scratch, I just won't do it.

I do have one I use sometimes for adjusting poses on naughty furniture. His name is "theotherbethmacbain" so there can be no confusion.

Wait what? Installing an additional program just to be able to get a Linden Home?

That isn't crazy. That is insanity. There should not be a need for any such thing.

I have now lost any desire I had for a Linden Home. So that leaves me only one reason to go premium now and with all the private estates...

Seems like LL doesn't want my money since every time I start considering going premium... they pull stupid shiite like this and force me to make an about face.

The auto refresh is not required; I did not use it to get my houseboat.

Some people have chosen to use an automated way to refresh the page, hoping someone will abandon a home and their automated refreshing will catch it as opposed to doing the clicking themselves. It's an option a resident came up with, but it's definitely not mandatory.

I didn't say it was required or mandatory. Wasn't implying it either. Just the fact that people are finding it necessary is a glaring error on LL's part to go along with the hundreds of glaring errors LL has committed over the past 16 years. They have a unique product. They know it. They have a monopoly (close enough) so they take advantage of it. Which doesn't help their image, at all. People outside of SL (non-residents) hear about these things and it turns them off. That means that LL is turning off potential residents, potential income. This is why people say LL keeps shooting themselves in the foot.

I'm trying to figure out how to say this in a way that doesn't sound ugly because I sincerely don't mean it that way.

I am genuinely curious about why you stay in SL, or associated with SL, when it seems you dislike LL so much. Of course, it's absolutely none of my business, but I since I started using these forums a month or so ago, it just really seems like you are unhappy with every decision LL makes or has made. There must be something good that keeps you here?

Indra was to see what it was like to be a woman in SL. Verdict; not a fan.

Sounds like there's an interesting story behind that statement.

As for me, One alt, land group/premium/utility.  Her name is CeciliaCreeggan Resident, and is acknowledged as my alt in her profile.  She's not even meshed out...currently.

Then there's another female that I use when I'm feeling promiscuous. Physically she's the exact opposite of Rae, and basically does all the things I wouldn't want publicly known. Yep, she's a complete hussy. Or is, on the rare occasion the mood takes me.

So a flagrant hussy like basically every other female avatar in SL...HA!  I just do hussy things as myself.  I was in an SL porn machinima once, back in 07 or 08...really, I was.  Just did it out of a sense of just having a different experience.

I have met a few people who seem to dislike SL, a few of those saying they ought to leave.   They sometimes do....maybe for 6 months or a year....but they tend to come back.  Because  once you've been in it for years...it gets in your blood.   It's like Hotel California.  You can log out any time you want, but you can never truly leave.

On a prim linden highway, no wind in my hair.
hitting the pgup key, rising up through the air
up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
the Lag grew heavy and my RAM grew slim
I was going to logout for the night

.........

I think it's more that people are fed up with a lot of the mistakes LL has made over the years because of the people's love for SL. Kind of like how most of us don't have a choice of who we pay for our electricity because there is only one provider we can pay in that area. Prior to moving I had to pay PGE. Now I pay the town I live in. If I want electricity I have to pay the town, not PGE, even though the electricity comes to this town from PGE.

When it comes down to it, SL is, in spite of LL, the "top rated" virtual world in existence and that is what most people are going to choose even if they are not very happy with company performance.

Yes, I would agree on that.  SL's "success", such as it is, is mostly in spite of LL.  The users LL has...are not the users LL wanted.

Somewhere on the forum I posted about what happened before 2003, possibly in that thread that was recently deleted.

Philip took notice of the number of people (the majority) who were interested mainly in the creative aspects of his platform rather than the VR aspects which is what SL was supposed to become. That's when Philip shifted gears and SL became a creative platform instead and opened to the public as such in 2003.

Philip made that decision and it's what has kept SL going for 16 years and what will keep it going if LL doesn't screw the pooch. The social aspect is just an offshoot product that doesnt' really bring in that much income for LL. Land and creators are the sources for most of LL's income.

How can you say that the social aspect doesn't bring in much income? Without the normal people who come here to socialize and whatever there wouldnt be anyone to rent land from barons or buy items from creators.

If people are spending more than $2.97 million USD annually on new stuffs for their new Linden Homes then someone needs to rewrite the math and accounting books. That amount is the estimated monthly tier for just private estates according to Tyche Shepard's Grid Survey as of May 2019. Her estimate for mainland is $0.7 million USD. That's a combined total of over $35 million USD anually.

So that is the highest income for LL.

The second highest is most likely the fees LL collects from Marketplace from the creators, not the people buying the products.

Any other income category isn't likely to be higher than what LL collects from the MP except for land/tier.

If anyone has any figures they got from LL to show anything different, please, by all means, share.

Its the little people paying weekly rent that help pay for that land the barons own lol. Same for the creators they can keep creating because they make sales.

yes

its an example of people who socialise and spend money

my example is that since I started again on SL, 6 months now. I have spent over $US600 on SL stuff, not land or tiers that was extra, just on stuff. Because I am now fortunate to be a position to do so, when in past times I was not

all our spends together add up

You're taking what I said as if I were claiming basic accounts don't contribute. That is not what I am saying. Not even close. I'm not going to sit here and argue about it either.
