why bother to spend tons and tons of cash on a sim for people to set home to or just enjoy it, when no matter how much you spend on it or how good it looks ungrateful residents, would still rather poof the sec they land before even looking at it i dont get it.

*shrugs* Not everyone is going to stay to hang around. Not everyone is going to like your sim. Some might be looking for something specific and realise once they have landed that your sim is not it. If this is really triggering you that badly then you might as well log out of SL and go do something else because people teleporting in and then straight back out is something you will never change

"Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder"  "Build it and they'll come"

If you're spending a ton of cash just to please other people then you need to rethink things.  Spend the money on your sim to make yourself happy because you're the only one who matters.   You don't know everyone's circumstances such as maybe they had to log off quick for whatever reason and they'll come back later.  There are some things you can do too like submitting your Slurl to SL Destinations to be featured.  If accepted, it's one way to get noticed by a lot of residents.  If you think it's a good sim for photo taking, contact the Blogger/Vlogger Network so they'll add it to photogenic sims list on their website.  I'm sure there are a lot of other marketing ideas out there too.  No matter what you end up doing, stop referring to residents as ungrateful.   Who wants to visit a sim created by someone who acts like a 2 year old because they're not getting their way and resulting in name-calling?

I'm gonna assume that it's this freshly-minted alt "who acts like a 2 year old", not the account that pays the bills.

Because it's an alt, I can't tell what region is at issue, so it's just random guesswork what might be discouraging people.

For example: Maybe there's a greeter. Those usually drive me away instantly on arrival.

Or less likely: Maybe the region used to be the location of a popular store or venue, so now folks following outdated landmarks quickly discover they're in the wrong place and teleport out so as not to intrude.

Or maybe there's something about how the region is promoted that selectively attracts "ungrateful" visitors.

The main reason people go around SL visiting regions is a) to shop, or b) to find other people. (I've left out the sailing/flying/driving ones as they don't seem relevant here)

Assuming b) is relevant here, your *main* is up against the problem everybody who starts a sim for Roleplay. clubbing or socialising faces: visitors to these sims are put off by low avatar density. Equally, if you stuff it full of alts, they'll realise just from the profiles or where the green dots are that there's no real people there and poof just as quickly.

The real answer here is motivation, do it for yourself, not for others.

Did you buy a second-hand region? The people teleporting in may have been looking for whatever used to be on that region and left when they found out it wasn't still that.

  "Build it and they'll come"

As a wanderer of lost and forgotten places, SL is a wasteland of crushed dreams based on beautiful builds.

Build it and they'll come is not true, not even a little bit.

What's the first thing most look at when going somewhere - are there other people here? No .. move on. (This is also why Sansar has no concurrency)

Busy places are busy because they are busy, plenty of busy places have been killed because the owners felt under pressure to redesign, presumably to be more fitting for the crowed that gathered / more attracted to vendors.

A more accurate motto would be "collaborate and get your friends to join in".

The idea of Second Life and the land is for you to enjoy it as much or more than your visitors and guests.  We put tons of money into our sim and have the same issue, those who stay are phenomenal role players, those who leave, we're just not what they're looking for, and the bots can be banned, trouble makers can be banned.  The key is time and "patience".

I build is just a backdrop, give people a reason to stay and encourage them to bring friends.

DING! Winner.

I had a great role-play sim. It lasted three years straight before admin management burnt me out and I transferred it to a friend and moved on. Great design, all PRIM, and the main thing is that it was all just background scenery except for a "main square" gathering place. Everyone knew where to find everyone. Then they introduced Homestead sims and I was pressured to added to create homes people could rent. That was the beginning of the end: Those who did rent camped there all day, people started to scatter, there was no longer a main focal meeting point for people.

It was all about the stories and camaraderie, and as soon as there was another area to go and do something else within the region... they went and did it.

I know no one cares about all I've just said. I mostly say it so I can NOD, NOD, NOD emphatically at what Coffee says.

And maybe as a little advice to new region owners wanting to create a nice place for people to play or hang-out: The key is to use no more than 1/8th to 1/4 of the entire region and make it the main focal hang-out point. Everything else should be nothing whatsoever other than eye-candy. OH, and use mesh only to *compliment* PRIM builds. You'll really help cut down on FPS lag for a lot of people. Think stage-play: use cardboard and styrofoam for all your background props and stop overdoing it.

Sadly, yes. Yet we keep trying to improve our piece of the world.

Belessria, though... There's enough casual traffic that making some place look interesting is worth it.

I feel your pain...but...you need to consider what these other people want in addition to your plans. They want something to do. The regions I've created were praised for their beauty, but they would not have been successful without the region owner who hired me and who was a great planner and knew what the visitors wanted. It's just the way SL is...

nah i bought this sim its not second hand doubtful there is any lm to it but i do need to try a bit harder, the sim was built for sight seeing its based on the Japanese culture so its more nature buildings cuddle and photo spots, then any thing else but i just got upset i made it very photogenic over 18 days on landscaping etc, but i think ill add in a movie  & game spot to make it so people will hopefully stay a tad longer and just have some patience.

Do you have it in the Destination Guide and in Search for either the Nature or the Photogenic category?

If you have a Flickr group for the region, you could have a sign at the landing point with the Flickr group info, and suggest that people taking pictures there submit them to the group.

@MileyRosemarie Good on you for taking on board what people have been relating to you here

it can be a bit frustrating for sure when we put a lot of work into making something that we love and in the initial days it seems like we get  0 appreciation for it from visitors.  Like you say though we need lots of patience in the initial visitor retaining phase, changing little things up here and there as necessary, until we get sustainable traffic

keep your head up, stay strong, keep smiling and keep on loving and it will work out

i will relate 2 experiences of my own. One that worked out for the owner and one that won't

first the one that won't.  I like to play board games. Recently I have been playing Bubble Breaker. Try to get on the leader board, which can take several hours sometimes. I find the games in Search. My avatar traffic contribution to the parcel is 60 points an hour. 120 for 2 hours, etc.  I was playing the game on this really lovely well-decorated region, lots of effort and work had gone into it, which had advertised the Bubble Breaker game in their parcel description. I had been to the region 2 days in a row.  Just over 4 hours altogether.  On the second day the owner IM me and said that if all I was going to do there was play the game, and not use any of the other facilities, then I am not the kind of visitor the region was intended for. And that if I don't leave then I will be ejected. For both days while I was there nobody came to the region, other than the owner and the region manager. I never said anything back to the owner other than "ok sorry" and left as they asked me too

second the one that has worked out.  A person asked me to help build their region profile. I said that their region is them. That their region should reflect who they are,  what they like, and what makes them happy to log into every day. That when the owner is happy then the visitors pick up on this and come back.  So the owner stopped making it about the visitors and remade the region to reflect their own personality and likes. Which did then attract people who liked the same kind of things and had something in common with the owner, which they could talk about

the comparative point about the first region with the Bubble Breaker game. Why would we put this game on our region when we don't actually want people to come and play it

Happens to me at my sim all the time...   Are you angry because they are not tipping you to?

busy locations also contain a lot of bot.
