Universities and large companies commonly block users from logging in to places like Second Life when they really should be doing something else like studying or working.  It's not just a matter of keeping users focused on why they are there.  It's also a matter of managing bandwidth.  Campus and corporate systems can get clogged with people exploring recreational sites while other people need the bandwidth for doing productive work.  If you can make an educational case for using SL during normal class hours, I suggest approaching your campus IT manager.  If not, consider offering a backup plan like opening bandwidth for recreational use after 8:00 p.m.   If even that approach doesn't work, take your laptop to a friend's off-campus apartment.
