Hi

Just came back to Sl after a long break and selected a new avatar, one of the stock and I think it's mesh, as it's wearing an alpha.

Anyways the clothes are painted on, so it seems, no way to change them or take them off.

To be able to do this do I just need a new shape and skin, I do want an all free avatar don't mind if it's not mesh?

If the shape and skin and some clothes is all I need for the above, do you know if any good places where I could get same as to be honest I don't have a lot of rl time to spend getting it all together?

Many thanks for any advice.

Sara

If you're going for the human starter avatars they're all classic avatars, just like the old days. The alpha is to keep the body from poking through the mesh clothing they're wearing. You need to detach the clothing and the alphas in order to get down to the skin. Some of the starters may have painted-on underwear, but most that I've seen don't.

Someone else is bound to come along with recommendations for skins, etc. Skins for the classic avatars are fairly scarce, especially for female avatars.

Starter avatars are all "classic" but with mesh clothes, hence the alpha layers. Free avatars will mostly be fine, they usually comprise a classic skin/shape with either mesh clothes (alphas required) or system clothes (no alphas).

The skins with the painted-on underwear were a thing a few years ago, but if you look through the Library >Clothing folder you should find some of the newer ones that have skins without the underwear included.

If you're looking to purchase skins for a Classic avatar, 7 Deadly Skins is probably your best bet; they seem to be the only skin-maker that hasn't switched over entirely to mesh bodies.

I think [The Skinnery] still sells some nice ones too. They ain't particularly cheap, though.

They actually did do one batch of mesh avatars - many/all of the 'Fantasy' and 'Vampire' ones.  However, you can't change the skin and they don't have HUDs, so you can't alpha anything to make other clothing fit.  Check the Library / Clothing / Initial Outfits. The mesh ones all have "(Mesh)" after the name.  I actually use some of them for alts, just because they look a bit better than some of the classic ones.

The below places still have classic skins, though not all of them are still putting out system layers with their new stuff:

7 Deadly Skins, but only upstairs in the older section

LAQ still has a section of classic skins

Modish might still have a few

WoW Skins - You can actually join their group and then grab the huge 'old group gifts' box which contains lots.

Stix

Dulce Secrets

Stargazer Creations actually makes many / most of their fantasy skins in both mesh appliers and system layers - they are all fantasy skins though.

Adam n Eve

can add Pink Fuel to the list for classic skins, as well as mesh appliers

not sure if Pink Fuel still do, but last time I looked they did have a gift classic skin for under 30 day accounts in their inworld store
