I thought it was something else that had changed. It's a very lovely tower, btw. You should totally sell it. No. I really should not sell it. I was taking the Mole ferry between that lighthouse in the background to the Squishy Pickle. And I was horrified to see it look falling apart. I worked more on it yesterday, and uploaded it on "high" but the LOD is still terrible. I am reading all I can about LOD and will try a new upload. Since I don't make windows, I have tried to find windows with the best LOD. And the octagon roof is also bought, and the LOD could be better. The only way I can do it is to make a roof all on my own, and find out how to get optimal LOD. I am not feeling for it. I am in a toss between should I care, since I see this fine on LOD 2, when in am in the range of 50 m away. (LOD 2 is the average for Firestorm) Or should I think about how it looks from 100 - 200 m away. You know we had this debate in other threads. Beside, selling is not an option, even if I get the LOD so fine that every detail is visible from 1024 m away. I hate dealing with customer service, and in my head, it will never be good enough to sell. I have seen enough reviews on the Marketplace, that I know people rip apart even freebies, and complain. I am not going that way. I don't have thick enough skin.

I am not going that way. I don't have thick enough skin. Welcome to LODs ! As you noted windows can be -- well let's say "tough". The mullions (pane dividers) in my latest build had to be 3li in order to hold together at a reasonable distance -- and THAT was depressing (and one reason why the Mole made homes are so high land impact). It is difficult finding a happy medium -- and USE is a big part of the puzzle. If your tower was going on a house inside a skybox for instance there would be no need for long distance LODs, but it is not. Personally I would say breaking a part at 50 meters is way too soon and having it work at 1024 is way too "primmy" but we each have to decide what our methods and gauges will be. For something that big and outdoors I would say at LEAST half way across the sim at LOD2 would be a good goal. Better would be good also -- so 128 to 256. One tip on LODs is that SMALL things will break up more easily at a distance than LARGE things, so IF you were making this all yourself, JOINING the pieces together before exporting would help a lot. You can't do that in this case so -- if I am understanding things correctly, there is likely no way to fix this. As you keep working in mesh, you will be able to make your own windows and roof and then you can do a better job. It would likely be good to put a comment on the marketplace listing (assuming you bought it there) that the LODs are not good. Personally I never buy any outdoor item without seeing it inworld --- simply for this reason. This was a great lesson for you though and really good to have at the beginning of your mesh making career (honestly I mean that!). Now you know what to aim for. When the beta grid finally gets back online spending some time over there testing would be a good learning experience. I bet you can find a tutorial on making windows. They aren't that hard really and then you could test out your own -- trying them uploaded separately and as part of a single mesh object. Eventually you may want to make your own LODs and Aquila can help you with that I am sure. But even if you JUST use the setting tabs in the uploader you can get much better LODs. When I am feeling "meshy" again (currently moving builds from LEA6 over to my store plot) and the beta grid gets back up, I am going to work on better LOW lod settings for those mullions. They are an "add-on for the add-on so really not a problem in the build, just "primmy". I am hoping I can get the li count down. Keep on learning!!!! And that IS a lovely picture of your house. 1

Part of the trick of working with LODs is figuring out what you can get rid of without having a significant visual impact. Your basic structure (8 rectangles + 8 rectangles = 16 rectangles = 32 tris/triangles) is friendly to holding itself from a distance. That's an excellent starting point. Are you interested in expanding your Blender skills to learn how to remove bits? Ditching the rounded trim pieces will save lots of tris, so that would be a good place to start on making your own custom LODS. The vertical and much of the horizontal trim could be simulated through an additional texture which has both trim and siding. From the pictures, I don't see why you couldn't learn how to make the octagon roof in Blender (though not the weather vane). It would be tricky to make the shape in prims but you could do it in about five steps in Blender, from the top of your tower. Also, crumple to nothing is a cheat but sometimes it's a useful cheat if the object doesn't need to be in a long range view (i.e. from a distance, it would just look like a normal Continental roof line). Just some thoughts. It might seem daunting, but I think you're probably closer to being able to do this than you realise. You understand spatial relations very well and that will give you a big advantage. 3
Marianne Little
I like this little tower project. I can make good progress in some days, for then to crash down due to health problems and/or family problems. The former affecting me physically, the latter mentally, and drain me of creativity and inspiration. 😟 I have had a creative burst now, but I never know when it ends. And that is another good reason to not burden myself with a business in SL. Instead I prefer to keep SL as a place to relax, without stress. So I am going to work on this as long as I enjoy it! 😁

Instead I prefer to keep SL as a place to relax, without stress. I just wanted to comment on the "customer support" bit in general. I see so many store owners complain about customer support and re deliveries and all that jazz. I have had stores for eleven years and have been working in home and garden for nine now. I don't think I have had more than ten redeliveries in all that time AND very seldom do I get complaints. This is partly because I test and test and let my alts test (sometimes they spot things that I missed although I have NO CLUE why that is -- sure there is a metaphysical reason *wink*). Now and then I miss something and when I do -- I fix it. I mean it should have been correct to start out with but no one is perfect -- certainly not ME. But if you are CAREFUL, I don't think you would have too much of an issue. I think I talk to about one customer a month -- not counting folks that want to know where to see something (mostly because they didn't read ^^). That's not a lot of customer support time :D. So don't count out a little store completely. You might actually enjoy it. Little by little -- we hopefully keep moving forward. Coby Foden
Evening Star houseboat. To furnish the back part of this houseboat I found a bit difficult because of the curved back wall. After many layout tries I was finally able to arrange something usable which pleases me. Watching here Tahitian dance videos on the media screen. 💃 There is nice open space up where I added some flooring. Perfect place for bedroom. I had to add the long stairs because there is no other way to get up there.
