I rarely have ever gone on SL, but when I do, it always feels special still to me, and I still like the familiarity of it when I do log in. I never went premium, but the new premium homes sure look attractive. Still won't go premium though till LL build some more, the new ones be snapped up quickly. I guess the old premium homes are gonna be part of a "slum" clearance programme with them being so old and dated now.

In some ways I am still noob, and I guess I like that. I came in this week to find an easter egg hunt going on and I was up for that and it was fun, made some new friends who took me to some new to me places. I read about people being fed up with SL, but if a person does anything too much it runs the risk of becoming dull and even a chore.

So basically you are hoping someone has written a new book they would share with you, you really do not want to quit, you really want one of us to entertain you.

1. I somehow haven't lost interest in SL at all.

2. How I feel?  I feel fine. I'm actually slightly addicted to SL, mainly because of the people and the games. I'm somewhat frustrated with the unnecessary complexity of setting avatars and clothing nowadays, though -- and by the lack of funny facial expressions on my fancy new Bento head. I mean -- look around in events and on Flickr. Everyone haz teh Botox. (Cataract eyes have been quite fashionable too, over the past years.)

3. What do I think needs changing? Adjusting avatars and outfits could be a lot simpler. And I sure would like to see livelier facial expressions in this forsaken botox world.

Come back to SL. Learn a skill here and create something and share it with the rest of us. That's what keeps me here too.

If you've done everything that you want to do, and seen everything that you want to see, and met everyone that you want to meet, and you have no desire to do, see or meet any more, the only logical solution is to close SL down, uninstall it, and play something else.

I somewhat losing interest to be honest. People aren’t as socialable as they once were and Shopping events seem to be all the hype now. I’m trying some new things though such as photography and starting my own store but blender is a beast for me right now.

I always joke with a good friend of mine that our souls are bound to SL or that we’re stuck in a sandbox void or limbo because every single year we always say that we’re going to quit next month or take a break for a few years and end up coming back after like...a couple of weeks or months lol!

I don't know... when I lost interest last time (with my former avatar), I told my friends that I  need a break from SL, and went on hiatus for a while.

Maybe that is because I consider SL as one "place" to go to spend my pastime, as only one of my hobbies. I share my time on the computer between writing, translation work, reading ebooks, SL, watching movies and browsing the web.

At no time though I've ever had the feeling that I *had to* go inworld for whatever reason. I even have a rule amongst my folks:

Quote

Real Life™ always has top priority, no matter what's happening in Second Life™.

When I log in, I even do try to limit my daily in-world time to 2-3 hours in the morning and 1-2 hours in the late evening my time, and I'm almost never online past 22:30 my time (13:30 SLT), no matter what - although my wife lives SLT+3, and some activities held in the circles I frequent are mostly for US-citizens.

I would not be in SL if it were not for interactive systems (farming, crafting, cooking, breedables, etc.), as I have never been in SL for social pursuits so there is not much for me to do aside from these things, and solitary exploring

What needs to change? Well, LL's attitude, primarily. They need to drop the "eh, good enough" approach to SL development, become more interested in the end user experience, and maybe adopt a fresh point of view on what that means. And maybe they already have. They're producing some long overdue improvements to SL right now. They've shifted most of their resources back into SL development and have announced a list of upcoming features that people have been clamouring for for nearly two decades. We'll have to see.

SL needs to be easier to use, without sacrificing the freedom it gives us.

Give us a graphical interface for adding features people can currently only achieve through scripting. I should not have to ever look at a script to create a teleporter, a chair with a proper sittarget, working doors, simple particle effects, and so on. Scripting should be there, for the people who know how to use it to be able to take advantage of it, but it shouldn't be the only way to do everything.

They need to push content creators to optimize their work, and do this without throwing out 17 years of content.

Unoptimized content is the root of most of SL's biggest problems. Poor framerates. Excessive lag. Long rez times. Texture thrashing. Alpha sorting glitches. LL will probably need to introduce some resource caps on avatars, and more realistic Land Impact calculations, but they'll have to find a way to do this without forcing people to throw out content they already own. There are ways they could do this effectively and relatively painlessly. The end result would be an SL that both looks better and runs better for everyone.

The new user experience, tutorials, content creation tools, social features all need layers of polish that LL has previously scoffed at.

Tutorials that interact with the user interface. Social features that make it easier to meet people and engage with groups, like maybe a user calendar that syncs up with events associated with groups you're in, or friends you follow. More tools to organize your contact list, making it easy to choose who can see your online status and feed, who you get login notifications on, etcetera.

And we need features that make SL feel more inviting and engaging.

That would mostly come from addressing all of the other issues SL has. A new user should be able jump into SL knowing nothing, and have a good time in their first session. They should be able to teleport to an SL city, jump in a car and drive around, and have it feels as good as doing the same in a videogame. They should be able to enter into an experience based sim and not find it all broken because they somehow missed the experience pop-up, or accidentally closed it without accepting. They should be able to buy some clothing for their avatar and not be frustrated to realize half of what they bought doesn't work, because it was made for a specific mesh body, or is pre-fitmesh and won't fit on any avatar unless you change your shape to fit the clothes. They should be able to try new body shapes without changing their face.

None of this is unrealistic, but it all really depends on LL recognizing what currently limits SL, what puts people off and drives them away. The LL that said they'd never give us avatar masking, rigged mesh or animesh, the LL that thought up Display Names as a way to avoid allowing people to change their username, the LL shipped 8' tall starter avatars that still used invisiprims long after LL had broke invisiprims, could never achieve this. The LL that still ships starter avatars that are all entirely no-mod and sees absolutely no problem with that can't do any of this. If that's still how LL thinks today, don't hold your breath for anything to really improve. But, just maybe that is finally changing.

Penny, I'll add another bullet point, SL needs to advertise their product more. I see ads for a lot of different platforms on the internet, but rarely do I see any sponsored by LL. Those of us who are creators, own businesses or otherwise add to the enjoyment of others, need help helping LL. I for one cannot afford to do a major ad campaign outside of SL.

So help us, help you. Without content providers, business owners, entertainment and experiences provided by members, SL would be an empty place. On top of all this, WE pay SL for the right to enhance THEIR product. So, a little help please :)

Stunningly presumptuous. I'll just say what many are already thinking: if it's all so easy to do, why have you not done it, yet?

Why have I, a single individual of modest means, with hopes, ambitious, and responsibilities of my own, and without access to any of the resources LL has, not created a better version of SL all on my own? Clearly you've caught me. I am undone. Your logic is flawless.

Perhaps for the same reasons LL hasn't done it either? Or maybe why so many keep trying using Unity?

Were you aware that much of what comprises SL were things LL acquired for free? Like the avatars were originally an outdated version of Ruth of Poser 3D fame (Daz 3D's predecessor)?

So... how come you haven't done it... yet? :P

Yes. Just like Disney. My point is that anytime someone complains about something - it's fine as long as you can include a solution to go along with the complaint. No solution makes it nothing more than... you get the idea.

One example they were saying is "Give us easier to use, but keep the freedoms..." - Okay, how? Examples? It's easy to say "make the user interface easier!" and not provide a single description of what that is. It's easy to demand " The new user experience, tutorials, content creation tools, social features all need layers of polish that LL has previously scoffed at." - which is stunningly presumptuous to proclaim LL "scoffed" at it and yet, again, not one single example of how to accomplish such.

Does this help you confusion emoticon you put on that reply? LOL

As for why *I* haven't done it, yet?

Because I don't have a giant chip on my shoulder, nor ignorant enough to presume I can, which gives me great pause before accusing Linden Lab or anyone else that they can't. :)

Well, you make demands with no examples of what it is you actually want. ~shrugs~

Anyone who reads the post you quoted yourself can see that's not true. Maybe you want more details? That's fair enough, but that's not what you replied with.

To suggest I'm being presumptuous when you have no idea who I am or what I do is extremely hypocritical, and to suggest one needs to produce a competing product,  by themselves, out of pocket, and in their spare time, just to qualify as someone you'd allow to post suggestions on a user forum is insane.

I got your point. I think you missed mine. Oh well.

What confusion emoticon? I stuck my tongue out at you. Here, let me do it again. :P

Neither does Penny, nor is Penny ignorant, nor is she presuming. There are things LL should have done more than a decade ago (many that are still needed) that are still gathering dust because LL doesn't think it's needed. There comes a time when LL depends far too much on resident content creators. That time has come and gone. That needs to change if LL wants SL to be viable and financially feasible for another 15 years.

I've sort of lost interest.. which is why I'm here on forums lol.

It's sort of like when you've got a pizza phase, you eat it all the time 'cause it's amazing. Then you kinda get bored of it, so you just eat something else. I dunno, maybe I'm just hungry.

Anyway, you should probably try something else.. or try a different topping.

I started off exploring sims alone or with people. Then I moved on to taking pictures. But recently for some reason I crash whenever I up my graphics for snapshots so I'm over it.

But this is fun, forums I mean 😃

SL isn't a game, it isn't supposed to entertain you - it's a virtual world, in which you can do just about anything you want that you find entertaining; whether it's socialising, exploring, building, playing games, role playing, photography, animating, sailing, flying, driving - anything you can think of, more or less.

Some people can sit with a pen and a blank paper and somehow be bored, but if you've got some creativity you can use that pen and paper for drawing, writing, doing some mathematics; it's not the tools that are entertaining, it's how you use them. And yes, mathematics can be entertaining!
