A sim owner/content creator is being a jerk and accusing me of using alts when it isn't even true at all.

I must have missed something pretty epic, but why can't we say Sim? I thought it was something to do with a simulation of land something something or other....

I will stop saying sim when SL compiles a proper glossary for jargon used, so that instead of many words we use daily having so many different meanings we can all get along.

Example:

Rez - to drag to floor

Rez - to come into focus

Rez - day you arrived in this world

Alpha - Released final product

Alpha - some guy that is better than some other guy (or so they think)

Alpha - a transparent texture applied to something to make it invisible

Alpha - the system layers that have had a portion of the SL uv made invisible so that parts of the body disappears

Alpha - parts of mesh bodies that are segmented that actually do not use an alpha to do so HAZAAAAAAAAAAA thats a mind bender right there

I am just teasing but honestly

I thought a region was a grouping of estates ? and an estate was one SIM... I feel like I am trying to learn how to play some weird card game, what exactly is a flush ? see that is another word that gets overused

Flush - red in the face

Flush -  to send things from the body down the plumbing

Flush - something in a card game that beats something else

I think the host server runs a simulator (thus called sim) and on that sim multiple regions can be hosted, so basically your renting a region on a sim. But I coul dbe completely off with that too.

I just keep calling it sim anyway :)

Hi Sasy!  I wasn't going to get embroiled in this particular war of the words, but I felt I should correct this.  A region is just one grid square on the map.  An estate can be as small as one region, or can consist of as many regions as the owner can afford.  Typically, regions that are part of a multi-region estate will have the estate name as part of the region name, e.g. Caledon Downs, Caledon South End, Caledon Oxbridge Village.

"Sim" is short for "simulator".  In common usage, "sim" and "region" are often used interchangeably.  Unless you are Patch Linden.  For the fine technical distinction between the two terms, see this SL Wiki entry (which also gives definitions for a lot of other land-related terms): http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Land

One last very picky point.  "Sim" is a shortened form of a word, but it is not an acronym.  Therefore, you need not write it as "SIM", in all caps.

Lol I was just being cheeky with the caps. Thank you for the explanation though, I did originally think it was simulator, then rethunk it and settled on simulation, as in each persons creative environment.

No alpha, typical. Just kidding, but what hilarity. The first word on most letters were hilarious, baked, facelight, escort...it needs a dusting.

The other has alpha yay, not really the ways most used, but included.

I also think the reason I got confused on the region estate thing, was I am both an Estate Owner, and Estate Manager on multiple sims that are separate islands (that is were it gets me) which are regions, but it sounds so expansive saying region, because in RL a region is unlikely to belong to the same person, it can be multiple towns... where as usually someone in RL may own an Estate, which may vary in size but is one connected thing. If I say sim I will always mean one unless I say sims, the same if someone else said it to me, if they said region or estate it would make me think of Caledon as mentioned, Furnation, or the old Transylvania. I think I will stick to sim/s.

Does Patch not like it being used because of the game ?

Because it is in the Glossary.

sim
Simulator, which can refer to a single region or the hardware or software simulating one or more regions.

Thank you! So many make the mistake of assuming sim is an acronym and then get their panties in a wad when corrected.

Patch is correct though. Technically, neither regions nor estates are sims. The sim is the program that runs the regions/estates. There can be several sims on a server. Way back when, LL was infamous for cramming as many regions into a single sim as they could, which, obviously, was not a good thing, when cramming as many sims as you can onto a server at the same time.

So you have server, then simulator program on server, then regions on the simulator.

And to make things even more confusing, "server" can refer to the hardware AND the  simulator software. That is probably the main reason most just use the term sim to cover all but the server hardware.
