I don't know if it is RP but in SL you can choose to be a male or female. You can have 2 avi. One male one female. And you can RP for each. Did you do that ? What is the easiest for you ?

As result, you can marry to yourself and make a third avie to be your own child.. etc. your imagination is the limit

Personally, female is my choice, but I don't mind hopping into a male character's skin either. Or something that does not affiliate with any genders for that matter.

Now for preference, as far as I'm concerned, it boils down to what you feel comfortable playing AND what you can immerse yourself with.

The more comfortable with the person you play as you feel - the more immersive you'll be able to play said character.

What I mean is, a character is mainly built up by their memories, their past, their experiences primarily, only then it's a concern what dangles between their legs.

Unfortunately I feel the roleplay in Second Life is often mistaken for erotic roleplay by many, which is in fact, a very fun activity but it is only part of roleplaying, not the whole concept - so a lot of characters are done to be oversexualized, without any content behind them, making them very dull to interact with. Good roleplayers will remember John, the captain who made the whole night rememberable - not John who looked like a total hunk...but did nothing to contribute to the event.

I think I'm steering off the main topic but there ya go, my 2 cents.

I have never been a male in SL.  I did switch from human to being an animal though...a Dinkie.  A Dinkie is an absolutely adorable cat who wears human clothing, and we have pot bellies.  I am girl Dinkie.

Some Dinkie clothes are unisex.  My Dinkie is currently wearing pigtails, a flower hat, a henley shirt, a black denim boy's vest, boy's jogging pants, and pink Ugg style boots....or however you spell those darn boots.

But, that is how I dress in rl...in comfy clothes that could be described as unisex.

But, to tell you the truth...nothing is easy in SL.  As an animal that wears clothes, I can be an outcast.

It takes a bit of courage to put yourself out there and say you will accept me no matter what avatar you are.

I very much enjoy being a Dinkie because we hang out with all kinds of unique avi's; humans too.

You can be more than 2 avi's.  I believe five is what LL wants.  I have a total of three.

If you do as I do, and keep all your different appearances on the one account, they are completely unlimited. It's really only necessary to make alts if you also want a different name, and change so frequently that changing your display name once a week is not enough.

I'm a trans man (female to male transgender) and I spent 40 years trying, and failing, to be a convincing woman in RL. So I am much more comfortable being male in SL too. However, I do have a girl alt and I have to admit I enjoy the wider choice of shopping opportunities available for her. I rarely take her out socialising though, the one exception is following one of my Club Noir DJs to one of her other venues (and yes, the DJ knows who she is). That venue is women-only, it's just about the only way to avoid all those annoying "Hi how r u?" IMs from desperate men. I don't think I would ever dare take her to a mixed-gender venue.

I have been a dragon, a dinkie, a tiny, a petite, a human (alive and undead), a pair of boots and more I cannot remember.  All of these have been female.  Only a little bit curious from time to time about being male but if that took my fancy, I would explore it on an alt rather than mix them on one account.

As male I prefer a male avatar. But I do interact in RP with a female alt, too, meanwhile maybe 50% of RP-time. Most of the times, the story of RP needs decisions to be kind, smart, a gentleman, a lady or a rough and tougher character. So it can be recommended in a special RP to be male or female. But, most of the time, gender is no question in my RP, sex is private, talking about sexual themes, hmm, but can get the impetus for a funny RP. Playing an insect, a bird or a tiny rat it's more fun and also as a cactus sexual questions are really rare then 😉. Gender is not affordable to get in mood or become a character with empathy. I found, that if you try to express deeper sensuality and mood - and the others interact - you'll receive sometimes a wow-effect and real mood - sorrow and happiness included. So it belongs to your 'setting' of the character and a little bit of experience how to interact by words or gestures. The visual (gender) impact of an avatar is secondary for me - 99,9% I'll stay in my pants or whatever. Much more interesting for me is to develop the character of each avatar. So, after ten years, someone can meet me again and say "Hi, Arthur, still living in..." or maybe be astonished about the different development of one of my other alts.

I'm always female since that is what I am in RL.  I tried once to rp as a male and it was hilarious but an utter fail on my part.

I couldn't be a woman. If I was I'd end up being worse then I already am and acting just like Madea and beating someone down for not acting right. lol :P

One of my male friends used to switch his looks often. One day he was a human male or female (he made a really good female av), next day a werewolf, mecha, furry, whatever he felt like. He told me to try being a male to see what it was like. So I made an account, went round grabbing all the free stuff for males at the time and I think in all that account lasted an hour, if that. It just felt odd to me to walk about as the opposite sex.

I'm trans in RL and having a female avatar in SL is part of my self-care, as well as becoming an extension of myself and my personality that I feel very natural and comfortable with. My alts are female too, although we each have at least one male mesh body and head for times when that might be useful for photographs ~ which hasn't actually ever happened yet 😂

I'm tempted to experiment with either masculinising a female avi or feminising a male one at some point, to create something androgynous and see how it feels, but I think I'd still be happiest as female.

I am a transman in real life but here I have both female and male avvies.. and bits and bobs. I enjoy playing barbie and ken doll so I have a looooot of different saved looks. I tend to use my guy avvies with friends more than the girl ones, out of comfort. But for exploring and whatnot on my own I use a girl avvie. 😄 There's just so much cute stuff for girl avvies too i get carried away.

I'm a lone ranger, an explorer, and most of all, a Warrior Princess. In RL, most of my time is quiet introversion, which I love. Here it's much the same. I'll hook up with friends for social occasions and for photos. But I paddle my own canoe. I don't need another paddler in my boat.

Being a maker of alts, before I made number three I looked closely at male avis. Y'know....I couldn't do it. Even just as a photo prop, my mind couldn't engage at all.

But as others have said, be what you want to be. But judged on shopping potential, SL is a girls world. 😊
