SL for Android

Question

Does Linden Lab have a SL viewer for Android? (even 2D is better than text client). If not, why not? When are they going to have one? (free, like their pc viewer)

It's not approved by Linden Lab, but there is the Lumiya viewer, available on the Google Play Store.

Not LL though, and not free 😢

Are you able to download the Google rewards app to your Android device? While Lumiya might not be on the TPV list any more and the creator hasn't updated it in a year + it is the best Android viewer available and worth the cost. If you aren't able/willing to pay for Lumiya Google's rewards app will reward you with Playstore credit which you could use to buy Lumiya

Because developers capable of writing an SL compatible game on an arm processor don't grow on trees.

If the Lab do decide it's worth it, and do spend the money hiring someone, then it's still going to take many years to complete that project. Many years of a high waged developer plus all the benefits that go with that.

As Shudo points out, LL will probably never make a viewer for mobile phones.  They haven't done so in the last 16 years, after all!

The fact that Lumiya is not made by LL isn't a strike against it.  There are many third party viewers for SL.  In fact, probably more people use a third party viewer than use the "official" Linden Lab viewer.

However, the fact that Lumiya doesn't appear in the list of "approved" third party viewers MIGHT be considered a strike against it.  Lumiya used to be listed, but has been taken off the list.  There's been some discussion about that, but most people seem to think it's still a "safe" viewer to use.

Yes, it does cost a little to purchase it.  Your other Android choice is Mobile Grid Client.  It's a text-only application, and while it's free to install, you pay a monthly subscription fee to use it (payable in $L).

Shudo is pretty much right. But, there is more to the 'why not' question. One part is quality of a Linden Lab product. People have an expectation of how an Android product should work. I don't see anyway for an Android device to deliver the expected level of performance and quality. So, a sub-quality Linden product would just make them look bad... harm their reputation. The second part of 'why not' is mobile devices lack the graphics power to present an acceptable level of rendering, at least acceptable in the eyes of the Lindens.

They built a VR Viewer. But, they couldn't get what they considered acceptable quality or performance. Thus they dropped it. There have been a couple of third-party versions of the VR Viewer.

I believe the Lindens are still working toward VR or at least keeping it in their thinking and planning. Just as they are aware of Vulkan as the OpenGL replacement. They are not going to switch over until there is some significant benefit that supports the cost.

For Android I think the highest quality choice is a remote desktop app. Run the viewer on your desktop and access it from your phone via remote desktop.

End of story:

LL wrote in their news blog that they are planning a mobile viewer beta in the "future" no one really would start writing something that would be "killed" after they release theirs.
