Ive got some clothing design ideas.. but im no artist lol..

Recommended Posts

Topic says it all.. with that said.. I had a business thought. Would it be possible for me to give my idea to (x) store/designer/clothing maker person lol.. and have them make my product and have them sell it and split the profit? They would make more than me obviously sense they created the product.. Anyways, how would 1 go about doing this? The first item would be a pair of men's board shorts.. so if popular beachwear store or other store would want to work together let me know. Or @ least point me in the right direction on how to go about doing so Thanks for your time

Sure that sounds possible.... don't see why not :matte-motes-asleep-2:

To test out reception to your concepts your next step would be get talking to some designers you'd like to work with. Somebody out there might love to have an idea man like you on board their team to get concepts up and rolling....

You could scroll through the marketplace to check which designers best correspond to the clothes you have in mind and contact them with a well-argued notecard, including a picture of your creation if possible. Good luck!

Ahh! This burning need to see a vision in the flesh is what got me started in SL creation. Inspiration is a wonderful thing.

I don't see why this shouldn't work, if you can find the right creator to work with. Make sure you come and show us the results if this all comes together :D

The previous poster are right, the idea is good. However I don't see it so positive like the other do. As soon as you are not best friend with your partner anymore all your design ideas are gone. Your ex partner will still make money with your ideas and I reckon it will be hard to make contracts which eliminate this problem.
So be very carefully with who you will do such business.

Well good luck. I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but ideas come cheap. It's the work that is put in that really counts.

There are lots of board shorts all over Second Life already.

Some clothing makers will take ideas, but will not do custom work let alone split the profits on it.

Still, you can try to find someone who has talent but no ideas, and then you would be a good match. I do wish you luck. Stranger things have happened!

A business man once said that to Nicoli Tesla.  Mr. Tesla died broke and owing; the business man did not.

Mr. Tesla's ideas were genius.

Follow your dream but be diligent in your research as has been suggested.  There are tons of board shorts out there now but perhaps your idea/concept is unique and compelling..who is to say?  Find the right designer and you may be on your way.

your business idea has NO CHANCE ....

solution : get in contact with people that are willing to learn you the trics to make cloths, will take a little longer but at least the profit will go 100% in your pockets afterwards and you will be listed as 'the creator' (the cherry on the cake) ... good luck White ... go for it!!!

Thnx for the comments all. I do have the time and will power to learn. That's not the issue. I am just a terrible artist and no training in the world can turn me into one lol.. I guess art isn't my Passion and I have no desire for it... i just have a good imagination I suppose. On the other hand, I do make my own gestures.. and then I realised I love my music enough to where I could see myself DJing.. but I can't figure out how to do certain things in the software and I only have a free server which takes forever to load and don't have the money for a good shoutcast.. so I was kind of hoping to start small n work my way up :P. And yes their are a ton of male boardshorts out there.. but nothing that jumps out at me =/

The Dream precedes Passion. That The Dream is spawned by Imagination, that from Imagination comes Inspiration, from Inspiration comes The Dream and from the Dream comes Passion, which is the energy that is both stimulated by The Dream and which in turn stimulates The Dream to move forward. The Dream then infused with Passion stimulates the Vision, the Vision stimulates the Purpose, the Purpose stimulates the Mission, but at all times and always it is the Passion that infuses each with the Life Force that is essential for any of it to occur. Thought of in that way, I believe that the Passion is present always, but that it is the Idea – The Dream – that calls it into action. Without the Idea, The Dream, The Vision, The Purpose, The Mission, the life force, the Passion, is simply there, waiting for a direction, waiting for us to choose a path, a direction, a purpose, a mission, a place to go, a destiny, an aim .............A BOARDSHORT!!!!

Actually, there are some designers out there who will make custom pieces, its just a matter of finding them. Usually they will charge a lot for the item, as its custom and they won't be making any more moeny off of it. But some will ask if they can sell it, though I doubt they will give you any profit, but they might name it after you!

As for surf/beach apparel check out Action and Action Surf and Skate. They are dual stores together and in world you'll find some great apparel and accesorries. Online they don't sell as much apparel.

here is a link to their apparel site:

It's a sweet idea, but if you want your ideas to be made in SL you will have to pay for it. A person who can make things already has a bunch of things in their mind they want to create, and little time. There is no way you will get a split of the profit if someone makes your idea. At best they would give you one free copy of the item. Everyone who plays SL has great ideas for what they would like to see in world, few get around to making them.

Now, if you made your own shop, did all the selling, setting up vendors, making model pictures and advertising/blogging. Then you have a possiblity of creating an alliance with a creator who would work with you and even share profit. It will still be hard to find someone, but at least then you have a chance. Either way you will have to spend money/time/work. If all you have is an idea, that is called a "custom job."

By the way, you say you have no artistic ability. But if you work for hours each day (as many creators in SL do) you will surprise yourself with what can happen. Building with prims, texturing fabric...its not exactly the same as just drawing a picture from scratch. There are templates and guides and files you can download. You CAN do this, but you don't WANT to, because it is a LOT of work to learn, and that's not so fun. Now think about it...if you spent all that time learning how, would you want to use a strangers ideas, and then pay them anything at all? hehe :)

If you have a great idea you rather should start to read everything about creation in second life so that you can start the idea on your own. In fact that is the way most creators including myself did start.

Be sure.. when you start today.. in some month you will already wonder and be happy about your very first creations. No joke. :)

Join this funny business :)

I see your point. I am not trying to discourage creativity. I'm pointing out the same thing you are in fact. The one who puts the actual WORK in is the one who profits.

Nicola Tesla is a bad example since he did put in the work but he just was a bit naive about business and he got exploited. Like many inventors, actually.

No offense to the OP but 'board shorts in SL' is not exactly a Tesla coil. I'm not knocking it. I was offering practical advice. And the truth. Most creators have all the design ideas they need. If it's a custom item for personal use, some will make something based on a suggestion, and offer the person a free one. But then they sell it in their own shop, and keep the profits.

Why should someone else do the work but a second person profits?

Thnx for the feedback. But I did state that they could sell it in their store but I get a small %...which would be negotiable

Like I said good luck making it happen and I sincerely mean that.

If you are good in business, you could get a couple of would-be designers together to make the clothing, and you handle advertising/marketing/promoting, hiring sales staff, etc. There are stores who have joint partnership that work in a similar matter. It's hard for designers to be good at what they do AND market themselves. But yes, I would advise you take the time and learn how to create for yourself, because that will be good in the long run.
