That, is a good question.

One answer I can think of at this time is that it has great potential to brainwash the masses due to more intense immersion -- even more than TV and the internet presently influences us.

Ready Player One is a nice Sci-Fi that predicts quite a VR traffic jam. People so detached from the real world, basically living in a virtual one.
