This a recognized problem with the current SL viewer and Macs.  See https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-25627

Here's a solution that seems to work.  It's fairly complicated, but the directions are pretty clear.

Here's the URL: http://neilrobinson.wordpress.com/2008/05/19/a-fix-for-dns-errors/

You need to add the following additional DNS servers to your DNS settings in Network settings under System Preferences:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

If that doesn`t work for  you, you can go back to the previous version of the viewer here http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Supported_Viewers make sure you also switch off automatic updates in your preferences or it will just update you again.

Well if your not back on yet, I'd say you were banned! And if it was just one Report then it's only a 1 hour ban.  That's the only reaseon I can think of why it says DNS could not resolve host name...    Just call SL if your not back in yet. They will tell you if you were reported.

:smileytongue:

If you do not have a Mac with this  latest bug, then the usual reason for that message is some sort of connection issue.

Restart your computer and router, leaving your router off for at least 10 seconds & also check with your ISP that they are not having any issues. I have had that message before and the internet works fine by SL doesn`t and it has turned out to just be my ISP having some temporary disruptions that just weren`t severe enough to kick me offline completely.

Once you are satisfied that it is definately not related to your connection, it could be incompatibility with the latest viewer update, so try installing 2.6.2. from http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Supported_Viewers and once you get into SL (on advanced mode) go to me > preferences > setup and switch off the automatic updates.

Very strange, I can connect perfectly on my old MacBook Pro, but not on my new superfast iMac. Both connected on the same modem with ethernet. Tried to add the DNS, they are indeed added to the list, i rebooted my computer, but it doesn't work. So I'm using the older version again.

Thank you for posting this, adding the DNS servers did the trick for 2.6.3, even on a Mac! I really wish that when first downloading this had been mentioned! as a Mac I find this type of thing rather prejudicial - ok, realistically, that is what it is in the PC vs Mac war....

@Celestial, it is not deliberate, after release of new viewer updates there are always bugs reported, sometimes a temporary fix can be found (as in this case) other times we have to wait for the next update before it is fixed. You can read the JIRA https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-25627 to see progress of the fix for this problem and hopefully when 2.6.4 is released, this workaround will not need to be done by the users.

Bugs can affect any platform, this one just happens to affects Macs, but Windows users get their fair share of problems too lol :D
