Question

I had been using Viewer 2 since it first came out with no problems. Now all of a sudden, I cannot log into my account because I am required to upgrade. Each time, it requires me to download it however I can not log on.

I downloaded another one but still cannot log on. I'm probably not understanding exactly how to change my preferences outside of logging into sl. Is there a way to change this without actually logging in with my avatar because it won't allow me to. I can log into my account via the sight but not my avatar.

If you can`t login on the older version then it would seem that it is not a problem related to the update. You can change your preferences from the login screen, unless you have the viewer set to "basic mode", but don`t worry about that now until you can actually login.

What exactly is happening when you try to login on v2 and what error message are you getting?

There is a JIRA about this problem for Macs https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-25627

Here is a fix posted by Gio Solo that might help you:

I found a temporary solution for my Mac. Now I can use Second Life Viewer 2.6.3.

I found the solution here: http://neilrobinson.wordpress.com/2008/05/19/a-fix-for-dns-errors/

Basically I had to add the following additional DNS servers to my DNS settings in Network settings under System Preferences:

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

If that doesn`t work for you, you should be ok on veiwer 2.6.2 which you can get from http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Supported_Viewers
