No.  Your name is like your RL Social Security number and your gene for pattern baldness.  It cannot be changed.  At least not now.   Sometime later this year, Linden Lab will be making it possible for people with Premium accounts to pay for a change to their login names.  Until then, be happy with the one you have.

As far as preventing a search, that will never be possible.  Your name is public information.  Anyone can search for it and see your profile, and can do an easy search to tell whether you are on line.  They cannot tell where you are, however.

No, it's can't currently be changed. They plan on releasing it soon, hopefully this year, more realistically sometime before 2025.

The last "guesstimate" (as of late Nov 2018) was 1st or 2nd quarter of this year.

Yers, yes. If the reason for needing to change is that urgent, it may be better to just create an alt and use that until this name-change feature appears.
