What is this AFK Poseball thing you speak of?

Recommended Posts

Not so much a relationship thing, but definitely a lifestyle thing, so I thought I'd post it here. This AFK sexy time poseball thing sure seems to be popular for well over a year now. From a sociological perspective, I'm totally baffled by the fact that AFK places in SL are at the top of all adult search results. As far as I understand, it's about humping a pile of pixels with no personal interaction whatsoever. Does anyone have any clue as to why it is so popular lately? Does the phenomenon extend outside the realm of Second Life? Do I have to worry about the future of humanity?

You should always worry about the future of humanity, assuming you have any interest in what happens after you leave this great pixel land for greater HD pastures.

Perhaps it has to do with laziness? Interactive satisfaction that takes no interaction on the user’s end? Perhaps the ability to do some good-will humping without the awkwardness of the partner asking for lindens?

*mildly wonders if this should go in the adult section*

Because they are freaking liars and not really AFK. They are actually lying twofold a) twowards what is actually advertised which leads to some suddenly spooking "guests" when the "host" unexpectadly reacts, b) towards themselves as they are actually just underpayed live prostitutes

One reason I think that AFK sex sims show up at the 'top' of the adult searches is... Well, you've got a whole lot of people generating traffic whilst AFK 24/7.

That is such a great idea. I can't believe it never occurred to me that people could do that. I might have to join one of these places now. I've got an animation for the Thriller dance. Do you think I'd get AR-ed if I also played a klaxon in local chat?

Just read all the threads in adult. Especially the AFK threads are fountains of hilarity... including people who tell you they play the Lindex like the stock market by selling high and buying low LOL

I'm sure someone mentioned the other day that they have a sudden BANG and particle effect/transformation thing that they use for magic shows. Please, someone tell me they have this thing as well and use it on the unsuspecting punters. If you don't, I will.

Actually no, it was a serious complaint about one John running away and not tipping when she spoke to him :D

I do love SL, but my God the place is crazy. Time was that the only way to have any real chance of earning serious Ls on those poles/dance stages and cages was to be a good emoter, interactive and articulate. Now, apparently the money's on people who literally might as well be dead for all they're bringing to the experience.

I am so digging out my Thriller dance. It played the song in open too, starting with the big dramatic riff.

I fear that might be considered trolling... hope you know what you're up to.

You mean they 'put'' bots on AFK avatars to boost search ranking?

I understand the AFK folks will generate the numbers, but it would only be lucrative if people are willing to accept such 'dead' interaction.

Generally, when I visit a place because it ranks high, hoping that there's some social interaction going on, and I find out that big cluster of green dots is only a bot farm, I'm outta there again in a matter of seconds.

So, AFK 'stuff' is the new camping?

This. And this is my biggest concern that started the thread: people's preferences shifting from human-to-human interaction on the one hand, to human-to-just a bunch of pixels that know how to STFU on the other.

Actually, that happens an awful lot in SL anywhere. Whenever I say 'hi' to a random stranger, they teleport away promptly.

Maybe I should go on a field trip soon, as my alter ego, to discreetly interview a few of these visitors. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's... Poseball Repairman. (For science.)

Yep, or standing around silent and motionless for hours on end at a nude beach.

Just to no-one.... Consistent green dots are a blight, the best places are often empty sometimes, and full others. And for that you need to look in the middle of classic search.

Hey now! I do that when I'm busy shopping at Market Place or something.

Okay, not for hours. Have to change outfits every hour and that is signal to go to the next Nudie beach to stand around motionless as I shop.

(But I do always answer Ims and things, so, um, yeah, your points are actually very valid and the unfortunate "normal".) :)

Sl is used by a lot of people as just a directed form of porn where they are the director of the action. And these afk places give them that feeling of power and control without having to deal with someone else's emotions or feelings in interactions. Similar to other programs like yiffalicious or 3dsexvilla, but give more control and variable interactions then those applications or just watching porn would do.

They don't seek the interpersonal relationship or role play between their avtar and another person behind the screen. it is just literally for fap material, where they are in control of it. That is why they are popular. Its either younger women and men or older that lack the skills to rp out a scene or just don't want to take the time to read a long drawn out scene. They might just want to get a quick thrill without all the emotions or reading and having to respond back.

And some may just like the idea of being able to use someone that cannot(because is  or should be afk) respond back. So they can do what they want or say what they want without any concern of the other person saying stop or no and breaking that feeling of total control and power. A mindless bimbo to be used as an f-toy and treated however the other person wants. It could be filing a rape fantasy where the other is either knocked out or drugged and unable to fight back(because is afk).

they may or may not even interact with the other person leaving them any rp to read when they come back. some do, some don't. For some it's the getting paid for providing a service without having to know the customer.

for some it might be away to meet others for later rp's by messaging back the person that played with their avatar and seeing if they would like a more detailed or interactive rp at some point either for free or at a higher price than the tip that may or may not have been given.

As i know someone, who knows someone, who is quite regurarly and often working at AFK places i can contribute a different point of view to the conversation. ^^

Its about 20-40% of all potential "customers" coming by, who are sending an IM ("hello cutie", "nice look"), before they even think about to sit/lay down. If there is no answer from the AFK girl, that guy very likely moves on to somewhere else.
A lot more than 50% of all customers are not spooked at all when the sleeping beauty suddenly wakes up (at any time). Its quite the opposite.
And of course there is the kinda small rest of guys, not needing or wanting a verbal interaction, divided into the smaller group who pays after, and the bigger group, whos members just leave after they are done without leaving a penny.

Therefore i would answer Arduenns question, if AFK places are just made to have fun with a sleeping doll, with a clear no.
Of course i dont claim to be right, because that are just personal experiences, and maybe someone else knows someone from this business and can tell their own experience!?

Why do they go to a place advertised as AFK sex if they don't want AFK sex?

Because it is cheaper than SL brothels? Also: Only in SL, ... ;)

Thats what i only can speculate about. Maybe they are too shy to talk to someone? Or they know its much less likely to get rejected at an AFK place, compared to what they have experienced talking to a girl in a music club...

I think @Fionalein has it, actually.

My God, that's depressing.

And this is why the very premise of these type places is utterly foolhardy the way I see it. The gal (or guy???) is the loser here: burning up that electricity and bandwidth overnight just to stay logged-in with zero (or ridiculously little) return on that investment. The landowner wins because traffic (from the campers) which advertisers foolishly use as a metric to rent vendor space there, and then there are the copulate-and-run types.

It seems it should be "pay before" being able to jump on that poseball/furniture/fornication-device. LOL
