Gopi Passiflora
Note: This is Second Life related because: isn't this virtual world a "society" of sorts? (Of course, whether it's truly "free" can be debated, though.) For me, it's where to draw the line as to what speech and/or actions should be allowed and what shouldn't. There are always disagreements between people.

Well, in a sense one does "live" in SL. But I was talking about societies in general, of which I argue, that SL can be considered. 42 minutes ago, BilliJo Aldrin said: Do you mean free as in freedom, or free as in free lunch? Free as in freedom. 38 minutes ago, Selene Gregoire said: Define "free society". Basically, having freedom of speech, liberty, something like that. Tbh you are not free anywhere lol You want to drive on the roads got to pay registration, you want a functional car you got to pay the mechanics when it breaks, we always live win different degrees of cooperation, if I am truly free I should be free from judgement of law when I go set someone's house on fire. No one and nothing is free from the cooperative constraints. Even the offgrid preppers would have acquired their solar panel from elsewhere instead of mining the materials to forge their own. It is more efficient that way. What you defined as free means you are free "as long as you don't step on the wrong foot".

Too much of a "good thing" is not a good thing. Anarchy is a prime example of what happens when large groups of people are allowed to police themselves. That's all I'm going to say since it is against forum rules to discuss politics.
BilliJo Aldrin
Probably the biggest "disadvantage" of living in a free society is that you have to take responsibility for your own choices.
Orwar
18 minutes ago, Selene Gregoire said: Oh. You mean Libertarianism. Not sure OP referred to Libertarianism especially, freedom of speech is a cornerstone of Democracy itself, 'liberty'... Well, that can be anything. Liberty as in abortion rights, rights to own handguns, right to vote, right to have whichever haircut you want (North Korea allegedly has 15 government approved hairstyles for men, and 15 for women). Most of Europe most certainly isn't Libertarian, and I don't think it applies to Canada either. Europe is democratic, to various degrees, some are constitutional monarchies with representative democracies, others are republics of various descriptions. There are no absolute monarchies or dictatorships in Europe at present, Most countries in Europe do regard themselves as 'liberal' to some degree, again using Sweden as an example, our government has made claim to being the first 'feminist' government... Which has garnered plenty of ridicule both for the government and the feminist movement. It's also a social-democratic society, even on the right wing of our political spectrum we're pro-socialism past what most other European countries feel comfortable with. Germany is Christian-Democratic and liberal - whilst Hungary is Christian-Democratic and conservative, Spain is Center-Right, France is Social-Liberal, England is Center-Right, Italy is Populistic (which currently appears to lean towards conservatism)... And so forth. And which party rules changes a lot - and every country has much more than two parties like the US does (again, something which makes me disagree with calling Europe 'Libertarian' - in the US it's more about voting for a person - or carrot - in Europe we tend to focus more on party policies).

In societies everyone (more or less) knows what the rules are. In SL they can change every few hundred metres.

Europe is a total mess right now, but for me to comment on it in here would see me denounced as hatemonger and probably banned from the forums again. In fact, this whole topic is a minefield of forum bans. My participation will be extremely limited.
