Are scifi roleplay sims dead?

Recommended Posts

I feel like my statement may be a little rediculous, but a good way to get people to pay attention.

I find myself constantly wondering where to find any sort of freeform scifi roleplay sims. Sure, i've found a few, but they're either overly complex and confusing (Remnants of Earth), poorly made/planned, or just completely empty. Sometimes all three!

I guess maybe I've been on SL too long, but i keep wishing for someplace like old Midian City before the owners kept shoving more and more restrictive rules into everything. I miss the total anarchy that the storylines could be, the rediculous multi-tiered build with catwalks everywhere, and good game-space flow with everyone congregating along the main street so finding a roleplay was easy and fun.

Is this sort of thing just gone entirely? It boggles my mind as a scifi creator that my products seem to sell fairly well despite there being seemingly so few places anyone can actually USE any of it. Or for that matter, that -I- personally could go to have some fun using my own creations.

A nice, compact and beautiful sci-fi sim for RP is 2019-XS http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Ravine/231/128/26 -- seems like it's just getting started and doesn't always have foot traffic, but when people are there they always seem cool and into adventure.  I know some people like Insilco a lot, but I have only just walked around and not interacted much with anyone there.

The fact this place is named after my absolute favorite UT2k4 map tells me alot as is, and looking at the build (albeit very small) I see alot of the things I enjoy here. I'll be sure to check it out again during the day. hopefully people will be on for me to meet folks!

This sim might need a "beware adult stuff in your face" warning sign but otherwise it looks great (and an abbundance of pornography is part of the cyberpunk theme after all)

It does have 'porn' and 'hentai' in the landmark key words. But yeah, it looks pretty cool. Can't tell how much of an RP sim it is though, and how much is just, themed hangout? Couldn't find any rules or anything. Still seems like a cool place.

I know I wouldn't mind a sci-fi place myself. I even told my sister it be kinda cool if someone did a TRON like place, given there are some creators who already have TRON-like items out there. Just maybe not the TRON grid, but still a grid... or you know something like that.

Have you been to Coccoon? I've heard really good things about it. The Star Wars series of sims have a good player base attached to them, too. Then there's Gor... which is technically sci-fi as well although it's kind of in a genre of its own for reasons that I won't get into.

What kind of sci-fi world interests you - if you could compare it to a set of novels, tv, or film?

For Sci-Fi (outside of the numerous Star Trek Spin offs that don't need the full sim) you have...

Remnants of Earth

Cocoon

Starwars Legacies

Midgard FF7

These are the non-fps ones in full launch, I know there were others very recently but they lack their own history for me to comment.

Hard to comment on them being dead or not though, depends what you want and where/how you enter. The new player experience is like climbing mount Everest and that in itself is death. Its a result of them always being understaffed and never being ahead of the workload that the sims daily operations and advancements cause, and this is for all of them. This in addition to the 'volunteer' mentality of work when I want to work, that crops up additional errors in work consistency (A handful of core individuals getting stuck with projects they didn't start themselves and somehow need to finish despite their own work).

As a result of over exertion/ extension, just like in government, there is a resulting decline in social programs when compared to what was before. There's just no time/manpower left to really push consistent content that's purpose is to connect various peoples together outside of their own, limited, efforts. Nor monitor the community for quality assurance, which keeps out trolls and individuals that become toxic after feeling isolated from the rest of the sim.

If you want to experience these sims as not dead:

1. Realize that they are private sims and are they way they are by someone else's personal preference, you will not change minds and you shouldn't try. Think of it like free to play, the breadwinner actually drives the content cause its them that the sim needs to keep. The board has been set, fixed, and your there to play on it. Its another reason to find and use your own friends not connected to you through the sim. There are far less consequences to kicking your friends lazy asses to get on and ready with a little motivation, then there is doing so to a stranger. Its called emotional investment (look it up), you have it with your friends which lets you withdraw trust, something you don't have it with strangers. Do that to a stranger and they are just going to get pissed/ annoyed. Period. The only stranger that will trust you without basis, is the type that is not busy and therefore not actively making an effort to roleplay (such a person might be considered an unmotivated roleplayer and more then likely will not return the effort to start another roleplay that you are putting in now).

2. Don't rely on the sims for roleplaying opportunities. Its just as, if not more, worthwhile to leave the sim and meet some people elsewhere to join you in the experience. Its the idea of attracting others to your fun, vs joining in on someone else's fun by using your own self reliant network. The former is more reliable, and a better way to introduce yourself to the community.

PS. I did not include apocalypse sims, as they seem modern with the twist of everyone being dead to me.

There is a new cyberpunk sci-fi in the making at the moment. It's called Sector 7: Last Light and the concept of it being taken in Neo-Paris. I'll keep you updated when it's done building.

Though I have mostly built sims based on 20th century flight and combat themes I am considering a restart. Seems there are more than enough VICE for format sims out there these days and have far more resources and income to expand. Though I started the interactive targets and sortie combat format back in 2000 before leaving to attend real life and come back the idea has followed suit and expanded. The saying of often imitated never duplicated was my adopted quote how ever as I said before the cost to run a homestead sim is not cheap and since the huge takeoff of WWI - WWII - and related sims my traffic has dramatically dropped including donations plus they can afford to attach more sims to expand. I have built some space stations and ships with a good friend over the years all static but the stations where interactive. Perhaps before I just decide to stop maybe try a sci-fi theme? Granted I may not be able to compete with whats out there but I love building things for people to interact with. I'm not a master builder surely not a scripter do mods when they work. Haha. Bu in any case I'm approaching my deadline to close and move on at my sim. As stated it's a HS sim not open grid if I could afford to expand or go open grid I would. Thought I would just come in here and plug my idea and get some input. By all means do so and even some pointers. Regards and be well.
