Simo Vodopan 203
*****, I wish it was completely dead. We gotta so many statues in Second Life as it is, these AFK Sex Places are just sad cash-grabs... I miss the interaction between people. Those places aren't impacting your SL experiance or do they? Just go somewhere else.
Qie Niangao 4,678
Not being judgy here -- I can usually appreciate a good kink when I see it -- but I've never understood what draws johns to these services. Is it just way less expensive than a (text only) escort service (assuming those still exist)? Or is there some special appeal to the idea that the doll is (probably) AFK? And doesn't expect chat? Do they care (or know) that the doll is connected to a viewer (assuming they are), as opposed to a headless bot? Does it matter that the dolls are logged-in avatars, as opposed to "sexy" animesh extensions of the furniture? Yes, I'm sure these are really dumb questions. I've stumbled on a few of these places (at least I think that's what they were) and I couldn't make any sense of what I was seeing.

Fine line between sharing a view / something else. It's not like I actively search these places and go to them causing a ruckus. Paraphrased a little, and I'm only speaking for myself (although I don't do the public AFK thing from either side), but this whole thing lines up perfectly with somnophilia. Some places even reference it.

My guess would be it appeals to the types of people that enjoy no emote/role play poseball sex, people that just want to rub one out, socially inept people, etc, etc. Can only guess, unless someone wants to volunteer the appeal to them.
Zzevir 1,248
Maybe it's not dead just... AFK. 😉😁
Syo Emerald 5,869
I don't think the whole concept is so foreign, considering that sex dolls in RL are a thing. I recently watched a video about the first doll brothel in my country.
Fuyuko Inaka 0
For me is a way to meet prospective new patrons who have leave me some IM that they would like to connect when I am not AFK, and yes sometimes I am actively around and will respond to "hi, are you here?" type IMs. A bit of some passive income and maybe just some variation of adboard since they can see avatar not just pictures. But to address topic, it's not dead but not lucrative like it was in the past, still maybe enough tips and contacts to keep at it, at least enough to sort of think it is worth it. Payoff is about as much as I got in past from adboards, and here I am not paying for the board, and can be AFK and peek in now and then.

AFK is somewhat like watching porn where no social interaction is needed, but with interactive options. Control of what the "actors" are doing. And it creates a sense of you taking part instead of watching others in pictures or movie. I can definitely see why people enjoy it. 1
Nalates Urriah 5,949
There no accounting for people's taste or kinks. If they aren't doing it to me or hurting someone... I don't much care. In late 2017 I wrote about the AFK Sex thing in SL. These places were popping up all over SL. Almost exactly a year later (2018) I updated my coverage of AFK Sex. It was still a growth industry at the time. I didn't care much the next year, 2019, and didn't write an update. The daily user login count is petty constant for the last 3 or 4 years, 50k concurrent users at peak. We sort of have a fixed number of clients for AFK Sex. An increase in providers divides the audience up with fewer and fewer patrons for each establishment. At some point the audience is diluted to the point a club's partons cannot support it. Clubs start closing. Left alone the free market will find a balance point. Unless a club can offer something unique or otherwise draw customers in it shares the audience and that likely means it isn't going to make it big. Now the AFK part is a small part of clubs with other attractions and most sex places have AFK places setup. Those I have noticed have few dolls and fewer patrons. AFK only places are going to have a hard time of it.
