A hairbase is one of the four required components of any avatar.  You can never have NO hairbase.  However, the hairbase component can be called a beard or whatever, which is exactly what has happened in your case.  You simply substituted one for the other.  So, you can either reverse the process or -- more appropriately -- add a new hairbase to your av.  Open your inventory and type "hairbase" into the search field to find one.  You will probably find several.  Pick one, right click on it, and select ADD (not WEAR) to add it as an additional component to your av.

Explaining another way... You applied an image of your hair. The image has the hair you see and transparent areas that cover the beard. When you applied the beard it was an image with whiskers and transparent in the area of the scalp hair. By wearing the beard you told the system to replace the first with the second. So, the hair poofed away.

Rolig is pointing out you should ADD the beard to the scalp hair. This will cause the system to use both images one on top of the other.

unless you are trying to texture your mesh head - which means you can't add... you need to layer juggle.

You need to do this....

Apply the hairbase to layer 1....
Save the layer 1 image to your Mesh Head HUD
Apply the beard to layer 1....
Switch to layer 2....
Apply the saved hairbase.

I am guessing Callum has the right idea  -- based on my reading of your question.  But note that mesh heads all work differently so his layer shuffling example may not work for YOUR head.    Best to ask in the group where you bought your head.

Is it actually a system hair item?  These have the inventory symbol of a little wig, and may also be called hairbase, baldie, bald head, or eyebrow shaper.  As Rolig says, you MUST wear a system hair item, it's one of the four items that define a minimum avatar.  However, she's wrong (this time) about using ADD to add a second hair base.  With these "essential four" items, you can wear ONE and ONLY ONE of each.

If it's a tattoo (for example, one that colors your scalp to match the color of your hair), then that can be worn and layered using the ADD command.

If it's an alpha mask (it'll have the inventory symbol of a shirt with a grid pattern on it), it's used like Nalates says...to make parts of your head or face transparent so they don't show through your hair or beard.  Alpha masks, too, may be layered with the ADD command.

If they are layers intended to be used with a mesh head, then you'll need to consult your head's user manual as Chic and Callum suggest.
