I just became a premium member. Can I get free land instead of a house?

Certainly.  Buy land anywhere on the Mainland.  You will need to pay the purchase price for the land, but your Premium membership fee will cover the monthly Land Fee payments for the first 1024 sq m of land that you own.  Those payments are credited to your account automatically.  Please note that they do not apply to land that you buy in private estates or land that you rent anywhere.

You may want to take Lindal Kidd's free class in Land Ownership and Management, offered Saturdays at noon at Caledon Oxbridge University, in world.  She covers all of those basics.

Can I buy commercial land or is it only residential?

Hi Phoebe!

We're talking about Mainland here.  There's no "commercial" or "residential" zoning on the Mainland, you can do whatever you want with your 1024 parcel.
