What's the difference between being delivered a folder, and having a box (for backup purposes) that when clicked, delivers a folder... in exactly the same place as the first folder? Seems like the end product is exactly the same.

Not always the same. Just look at demos, for example, some are called "DEMO - Item name" others are called "~[Funky Creator Name]~ Item name *DEMO*" and so on and so forth. Unpackers that create folders in my inventory with whatever screwed up name they want (and often NOT the same name as the object box, etc) and then I have to go find it. Even worse for boxed objects. It's 2019: I shouldn't have to unbox *ANYTHING*. (Is why I love Catznip viewer feature to put all new inventory into predefined locations).

I prefer the control over my inventory. I buy a new item, I create a folder for that item, located where I keep those items. I manually unpack the "box" (or HUD) so I can place those items I want into that folder I created just for it. I simply do not copy the items I will delete anyway: Landmarks, Irrelevant notecards (My favorite: LICENSE TO USE! - Deleted!) - Other body types that don't apply, etc.

Then I put that box into a folder I call "master backups". I have every box I've ever purchased since 2006 in that folder. For those items that come (unboxed) in a folder: I create a new folder inside the item folder called "Backup" and put a copy of all items into that folder (except useless stuff like LMs, irrelevant... you get the idea).

I can find ANYTHING in my inventory - even if I bought it 11 or 12 years ago. Because control.

You got it exactly.  The unpacker assumes that I want everything in their package and knows where I want to put it in my inventory.  So then I have to find its stupid folder, erase the stuff I don't want, and move the stuff I do want to the right place in inventory so I can find it again.  It is SO much easier for me to just create a subfolder where I want it and then drag/drop the few things I want from the contents of the delivery box rezzed on the ground.

I have the reverse process. I only really use the premade folders (Animations, Body Parts, Clothing etc) as top-level folders, so the custom folder space below trash is more of a 'workspace' for me. The new folder is always dumped there, always exceptionally easy to find. From there I'll rename the folder to fit my naming conventions, create the subfolders needed (eg for the box), cull the stuff I don't need, and then move the 'finished product' into place.

My last post crossed over with this so repeating myself slightly; but it seems like we have the same approach, but just an inverted process. I prefer to start with everything in a premade folder and cull from there though, as that's fewer steps than creating the shell from scratch.

Of course if it's a demo then I don't bother with all that - I'll take their obnoxiously named demo full of sizes I'll never wear, it doesn't matter, the entire thing will be deleted in a few minutes anyway.

How's this as a compromise: if all boxes/box huds (I much prefer huds, for ease of use) were to come with a "click to unpack" script, rather than an auto-unpack script, would that be okay with you? Seems like that's the compromise that keeps everyone happy, and doesn't create any unnecessary work for anyone.

If you right click on any box that has stuff in it, you get an Open option that lets you copy the contents to inventory.  If a thoughtful merchant has enabled the click menu for the box properly, you get the Open option automatically when you mouseover.  That's at least partway there.  The trouble is, when you copy the stuff to inventory, it still ends up in a generic spot instead of where you want it to be eventually. My standard approach is

1. Rez box

2. Open inventory

3. Create destination (sub)folder.

4. Open box

5. Select the stuff I really want to have from the box, and

6. Drag/drop it to the new folder.

7. Delete the box.

It takes all of thirty seconds, if I am slow.

and then - the tricky part - to hold the folder and move it 6 km across the inventory and all my folders to the right place, to the folder "Tops". Much less comfortable (even when my mouse currently doesn't have hiccup and doesn't drop thigns in random folders during that process)

Right click folder or individual item (or select multiple items using shift and/or ctrl and right click on one of them) - then select Cut, then right click where you want it and select Paste.  Skip all that dragging and accidentally dropping crud.

That's why I have a rule that abbreviations and acronyms should be avoided around me:

There are a few abbreviations I do accept (for example SL, RL, AFK) - but do strive towards avoiding abbreviations in general. I rather wait a minute for a written-out reply than having to decipher a quick one.

I have fun with those, making literally everything I answer acronym-like. To wit:

(Other) hi hru

(Me) hifty

(Other) wat?

(Me) isiaftyvmfa

To be fair, most get the point by then and start writing normally themselves.

This exactly.

Though one feature Firestorm *needs* to implement is the Catznip option to automatically (optional, of course) unpack any rezzed box or unpacker HUD into the same location as the original unpacker box or HUD.  So if I receive a folder that has a box in it, I can rez the box (or wear the HUD) and unpack (even if it's a scripted unpacker) and the unpacked folder will go into the same folder as the box I just rezzzed (or added). THIS alone is why I always use Catznip anytime I go shopping, whether for demos or retail.

Other than this feature, I do it exactly the same way Rolig does it.

Oh, and when receiving any inventory, I can set a default folder where those boxes or folders go. I have a @Purchased and #Demos folder and so every time I receive anything other than textures or LMs, etc. - I choose one of those folders where it will land. Which makes the unpacking feature extra-easy. (And like Firestoerm, I can set the default for textures and LMs and the rest also).

Having spent the afternoon sorting through most of the free group gifts given out over Christmas, along with a large pile of free poses from the Pose Fair, I have this to say:

When the revolution comes, creators that don't include unpack scripts in their boxes will be the first to the gulag.

Thank you for summing up my sentiments exactly. Lol

I take time off from SL from time to time and one thing that 'Peeves' me when coming back are the IMs. Not so much the IM's themselves but they are usually from old RP friends who will IM say hello and then go right into whatever line of RP right where we presumably left off , causing me to take pause and then log out to collect my thoughts again. lol

I discovered a new one today! Being flirted with. :')

I'm in a large group for residents of my state. Earlier someone initiated the normal 'hello' and me and some other people were like, good evening!', whatever. Then I get a 'hi' IM from some rando in the same group, and after I say 'hi' back he immediately starts trying to flirt with me. He just watched the names in the group chat and kept clicking profiles til he found some female avatars, I suppose. Creeped me out enough to just pull the picture of my human avatar off of my profile and replace it with something else, I've never been hit on with a furry avatar, ahaha.....

The idea of just doing that is so skeevy. The guy's profile said he was a dad with four kids, too, for EXTRA layers on top.

Stores that put the Maitreya symbol on an item, but then don't actually include a Maitreya rigged version.  Instead, they include a notecard saying 'wear the included shape for Maitreya and then the Small size will fit'.

Uh... NO !!!

This is why a Demo is always needed, even when the vendor implies that it will fit Maitreya.

The high complexity avi's running 756 scripts that come into an airport sim and park themselves there. The bottom feeders that you see hanging out on the bottom of public waterway sims 24/7 and immediately back there after restarts.  The same bottom feeders parked in a rez zone in those public waterways (makes you wonder if they are up to no good).

And my biggest pet peeve - Stubborn people who don't know how to properly use an orb nor follow the rules of orbs. Instant eject should be banned!

Like me flying over their parcel at 300 meters in a matter of seconds or lagging into their parcel while sailing is really ruining their SL experience!!!!

This isn't exactly a peeve but to me its definitely cringe worthy.

When you open up a profile, and someone has a hyperlink to a sentence like " want my attention? Click here!" And you click it and it just brings up the Pay box....when the Pay button is AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR INWORLD PROFILE!?

I'm sorry but is escorting failing so bad you need a second pay option!?!? ( I said escorts but you rarely ever see anyone else but escorts do this)

Like having that in your profile is just as cringe worthy as putting the link that if people click it, it changes their avatars to something silly like a monkey or chicken just.....WHY!?

Why have one when you can have two? Your desperation matches your eyes, as I always say... or I said this once, anyway.

I really do not have any pet peeves, but it's more of a mental disorder I encounter that irritates me.

Example: I tell someone that for breakfast this morning.. I had cereal. They will not believe me. They will come to their own conclusion and actually believe I had pancakes. They know more then me, and will argue me to the death that I'm wrong and they are correct. Not only that.. they will go out of their way and try to belittle me to make the lie they created seem relevant and true. They will tell all their friends that I'm lying to them, and then their friends will actually believe them.

Why should I even waste my time on a person who does not believe what I tell them? Personally I think I'm just too nice of a person and I just tolerate it. I was asked a question and I answered it. Is it my fault that others have such a hard time believing me? I'm no doctor but I think it's called schizoaffective disorder. You asked and I've answered.

But if you ask them.. I'm a doctor! And I have too many pet peeves to list. Don't believe me? Ask their friends!
