I doubt Sansar will be listed on Steam for long. Steamers are gonna fry it so badly that I cringe when I think of how reviews are going to read.

There has been some talk about SL being listed but that got shot down.

Steam isn't a good place for SL. Those people are gamers. SL is a creative platform. SL isn't going to give most of those gamers what they will expect so they'll end up frying SL just as badly as they will Sansar.

LL's rep has been in the toilet for many years. It's not surprising to me that they decided to flush and it's going to over flow.

Second Life actually was on STEAM awhile back (maybe around the date of the article).  I asked about that on Discord and the answer was that they had learned and done more research and talked to companies in the know etc.

Actually it is going better than many of us though it would.

Will see how concurrency is in a month or two.

SL was planned for steam and was later scrapped.

I've even asked since Steam is now allowing adult content(which I presumed was one of the reasons why the idea was scrapped) but was told still there are no plans.

Fun thing though, you can still see the steam app on steam, I even have it on my steam profile: https://steamcommunity.com/id/Felix_Wolf/

The community used to be accessable but steam later disabled that.

However, interestingly, the LAST activity on the Second Life steam app info was 3 months ago: https://steamdb.info/app/209930/history/ (September 20, 2018 – 02:29:07 UTC), so the idea might not be completely out the window.

i think LL should contact several types of media and tell and perhaps on some, show, what SL really is. And not only "your world your imagination... or made for and by users", but also the  "dark side"  the whole adult industry is the first people will find. As long they don't see their product as it is themself, how will they be able to promote it.
SL isn't about nice smelling flowers and humming bees only.
Don't get me wrong, i'm not against the adult stuff, but i think it should get a different place than it has now. It's a unregulated wild west. With some guidance it would be a lot more attractive. And perhaps even help users to come back instead of run.

It's been that way for 14 years.

I agree with you. I just don't see LL ever changing its hands off approach.

It started with Philip and should have ended when he left. And here we are. Still stuck in the same old rut LL continues to ignore.

I'm genuinely curious what further regulation folks would expect of SL's Adult content, beyond its current restriction to access-controlled, opt-in regions.

I mean, religious content can be out in the open anywhere on the grid without even a trigger warning.

Is it that some stuff is too offensive? Besides any sexual age-play stuff, right? Or is enforcement of that still a problem?

Not to derail in this direction, but I was unaware of interest in further restricting SL Adult content. (There have always been design flaws in the details of Adult region restrictions -- PG and Adult Estate regions can theoretically be adjacent, for example -- but I hadn't noticed anybody fussing about that in years and years, so I'm guessing this isn't about that.)

Re Adult content issues: DeviantArt has recently stepped up the removal of illustrations that breach it's guidelines, and Tumblr has announced that it is going to remove all porn, so perhaps there's a general wind blowing on from the Puritan Isles which will affect SL.

(/me switches back to the main line)

As for Steamers rubbishing SL, I'm not so sure, perhaps many will, but maybe others will see the creative side as something fresh and come across for a look around? I've also noticed that notoriety is sometimes as effective as glowing praise when it comes to drawing people in.

In what year?

SL launched in June, 2003. Steam launched in September, 2003. So if you mean "planned" from the beginning, that's incorrect.

Im double dumb. I thought you said I made a dumb but no I'm half awake and corrected a non mistake.

SL was planned for steam in 2012 but was later scrapped.

I agree on that, I'm on SL for 11 years (considering my very first account) and I've been gaming since forever and I know that gamers and SL mostly don't mix. Also a lot of people in SL are not open about their use of the platform (myself included), last thing we want is having SL listed on our profile. Residents are still considered creeps, weirdos and people with no life when seen from the perspective of an outsider.

No but it's time LL to stop wasting our money and beating  the dead horse called Sansar.

It's  dead, Jim. It was dead on arrival.

Now stop taking staff to work on Sansar, stop firing competent devs and start working on improving SL.

Is the  CEO utterly clueless?

edit: SL is not on Steam because LL is ashamed of the adult content here. They are trying so hard to not to be associated  with their child, it's embarrassing.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "restricting" adult content. My objection has always largely been the one that you mention here: that it's too easy to blithely trip from a Moderate into an Adult region without even knowing it -- or at least, it used to be. (It was, it has to be said, a whole lot worse pre-Zindra and the updated content guidelines.) And there does seem to have been some "creep" of adult content into areas it shouldn't be.

What I'd like to see is 1) better enforcement, and 2) clearer guidelines and mechanics for separating Adult from non-Adult -- I guess, what you call "design flaws"? I have no problems with the vast majority of content available now (as much as I dislike some of it), but better regulation and design would put more power into the hands of users to control their own experience.

The other thing I'd like to see (and this was something I was saying back in the 2009) is a distinction made between sexual content, and violent sexual content. Or maybe just between sex and violence. People are much less likely to be disturbed by running across good ol' fashioned fornication than they are when they notice that there's a buzz saw on the bedside table next to the other sex toys.

30 positive and 10 negative reviews as I write this. Some of the positive reviews are obviously from people with some self interest in promoting Sansar but even if we exclude those, there seem to be more positive than negative ones. The balance seems to be shifting towards negative but it's really way too early to say.

Yes. So far Steam doesn't seem to bring in any significant number of newcomers at all. But it's still on early access and December is probably not a good month anyway since people tend to be busy with RL.

Almost all of the positive reviews of Sansar on Steam are from people who were using it before Steam.

Sansar is "OK, seen Aech's Garage, seen the Star Wars prop museum, been to the beach. That was fun. Game completed!". Unless somebody comes up with a really compelling repeat destination, or you're a creator, it's a one quick visit system. Especially on Steam, where it's really easy to try a game.
