Q) How do you keep "lost items" from being lost? (more details within)

Question

So. I'm editing my items, right? Graphics are cranked up and distance/render other avatars is turned way down. Just me.

I went to tweak my shape, and now...It's gone. According to Second Life: "Can't find your shape in the database. Oh well!"

I am now an egg. Unfortunately, not a sexy egg. :(

How in the heck does one prevent this from happening? Am I able to get it back? I made a notecard of my shape, but what if I lose that too?

Pls, help.

Thanks. :)

Shapes sometimes disappear when it is discovered that someone illegally copied something and anyone that then has copies of the illegal version loses theirs.  Way back in the day, it happened with hair and animations a few times.  Though less common, items can also become corrupted.

Anyway, it is a good reason for keeping your shape numbers recorded somewhere.  In case you aren't sure about the legitimacy of any shapes that you have, i dropped a few on you that you can use as a new base if you want.

You can at least change from an egg to a cloud of mist.  Either one appears when the system is unable to render your appearance, but the egg version occurs because you have Particle visibility disabled.  Try hitting CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+=.  Failing that, go to CTRL+P (Preferences) and choose Graphics.  Set the Particles slider to anything other than zero.  4096 or so should be fine.

You should have multiple copies of your shape. You can open a shape for editing and immediately hit Save As... and give it a new name. Then modify the new shape. If it poofs, you have the previous shape in reserve.

I have a body and shape that I use as a base for most outfits. If I change that shape all the outfits made using that shape change too. Generally not what I want. So, I am almost always working with a new copy.
