Only one way to find out.

No, you don't usually have to but you may want to to get the best possible UV mapping.

Typically the NEW UV (decimated) map will show up in your UV window automatically. It has for me anyway. So if your UV map looks like a lot of odd shaped triangles it has "adjusted itself". I have had no issues using that same map but I don't decimate often -- typically only with draped fabric.
