Is it just me or are there less stores now? And where do you find a place with non-AFK people? Virtual worlds really are in decline, sadly.

Is this really true or just anecdotal?  Were the revenue figures for inworld and MP expenditure published or was there Linden statement to this effect?  I would love to know the source.  If it is true, it would be good to know by what ratio they differ.

95%+ of my sales come from the workshop. The in world sales are usually a by product of the webpage leads. In world store costs rent, requires manual management, does not have official backed index, the disadvantages simply outweighs benefits for a merchant. Inworld shopping is great for the consumer, but plenty of work for the merchant.

There is a lot less management, and you get to drop 1 star if it sucks.

Also @LennoxGregor role playing and sexual fetishism groups are always active. SL are mostly used for what's not easily imitated IRL, anime battles or snuff porn, whichever fills your boots but you get the gist.

@Gabriele Graves that's the beauty of the forum - everyone can give their own opinion.

All I know is the OP seemed to have a difficult time finding shops in world and I don't blame them. I've found some wonderful shops inworld that I frequent for apparel, furniture, landscaping etc, but I also personally think it's easier to find and browse these things in Marketplace. My statements were never meant to be Linden-Approved or "nothing but the truth" - simply a suggestion to help another resident. If you can recommend the OP some places to shop inworld it might be more helpful than checking the sources on my statements... ?‍♀️

Sure, I just wouldn't want the OP to avoid inworld shopping thinking that nobody does it anymore is all.

I don't know many Male clothing shops though:

Dead Wool, Gabriel, A&D clothing, LaPointe Bastchild, Giz Seorn, ZED, ADN, GAS, FN Dress, Adriatic line.

I am sure there are many more.

I think once you get older and older you stop caring about what others think

I'm not as old as some on this forum, but old enough, and with the added advantage of suffering from a degenerative and essentially incurable medical condition...

I don't give a rats backside what people think of me.

I keep checking the Destination Guide - I might find something to do with friends. I worry if my friends are bored so I need a place where we can have fun and destress.

Destination guide... Yeah, it's fantastic if you enjoy visiting empty high brow art installations picked by a committee who don't know whats popular in SL, or care...

There is educational and artistic content on the grid

A lot less education than there was...

Firstly, "virtual education" in something like SL, was always pretty useless for teaching anything except... How to use SL, and it wasn't much good at that.

And art... There's a lot of "art", much of it "conceptual & experimental", in SL, usually by people who are over rated and under-talented, and who get really vicious when others discover this fact.

Speaking from my experience at least, you really only encounter nudity if you're looking for it or if there is a griefer trying to annoy you.

Or if you are on an M rated sim, in a skin store where people are trying demos before dropping a grand on a new skin, or clothing stores where people are trying demos, or close to people who wear all their mesh clothing attached to their right hand, and then 'wear' a coffee cup... Derp!

Most of the "griefers" I've seen over the last 6 1/2 years were not naked... The crazier and more visually disruptive the outfit the more they liked it.

I have yet to learn how to deal with rude people effectively

I recommend growing thicker skin... The forum'sarchives are littered with the cold dead bodies of people who popped in here and posted...

"Dear Forum, I am shocked that somebody told me to [ censored ] off, just because I tp'd into their skybox home and said their furniture was ugly, AND they called me a [ don't look ], it's as if they didn't know that calling ME a bad name is a Federal Crime, of Cyber Terrorism, and I therefore request that the Forum ban this person from SL, and report them to the FBI... Their name is [ blatant violation of the ToS by the thin skinned whiner making the post ]. Thanks in advance!"

But bad treatment is often unwarranted.

Perceptions of "warranted" can differ wildly, it's common for people to complain they were banned from sims but did nothing wrong and demand the Lindens do something about bans on innocent people... There have been a number of threads about it, where subsequent interrogation and the grudging revelation of the facts paint a different picture.

One weapons grade a-hole on the forum complained that he had been banned unjustly from a sim simply for trying to steal the sim admins girlfriend, over a period of 5 or 6 weeks...

Totally unwarranted ban by really rude people...

9 hours ago, LennoxGregor said:

but still, I never see more than 50 people in any given region now

Having 50 people in a sim is a laggy hell, having more just isn't practical, thats why most sims are limited to 40 or 50, or even less now.

I know that many previously active members of the community are leaving in droves because of certain reasons - mostly boredom/RL issues, but also due to Linden Lab's changing policies.

SL is in a long, slow gradual decline...

But... it's misleading to compare SL now with SL 12 years ago, 12 years ago was the start of the Great SL Gold Rush, when millions flooded in, mostly for all the wrong reasons, and then, 3 years later flooded out again crying "Madlands parcels selling for LESS than 8 L$ a square meter? ALL IS LOST! FLEE!", it took a couple of years for most of the wrong crowd to disappear...

When I arrived, concurrency figures were between 30-50 k online at any given time, depending on time of day, day of week, the season, the weather etc. Todays figures are not that much lower. And the ones most likely to leave due to changing policies are the "Last of the Worst of 2006-2009" crowd anyway.

Least I could do is work as a DJ or a dancer/escort (lol).

There are more unemployed DJ's in SL than there are visible stars in the night sky... And most of them deserve to be unemployed...

As for escorting, these days you'd need a mesh avatar for that, at the very least. And there would be encountering all that "griefer nudity".

Anecdotal. In my personal experience people tend to shop more at events and on marketplace. If theres evidence to the contrary I have not seen it.

Allow me to present the first evidence for you.

Meet.... me.

I use the MP as a catalog and do the vast majority of my purchases inworld as does my RL other half.

Now you have two pieces of evidence. ^_^

lol nope, now we have several pieces of anecdotal data.  Not sure if anyone could accurately measure the in-world sales anyway.  Only LL could really come close to knowing and even if LL logged the amount in each "Buy" and "Pay" operation, they would not be able to tell that all of those were sales from stores.

I can tell you precisely what mine are, thanks to the handy dandy Caspervend :P   50% of my sales come from inworld, and that is (give or take a tad) the  same, every single month.

Also, I too..... do the majority of my shopping inworld.

Actually, that is a good point.  I expect Caspervend ? is probably in one of the best positions to be able to give the best possible estimate of inworld sales I would imagine.  Do you know if they publish this aggregated data?

I have no idea, but... it would be very interesting to know those stats.  I think a big enough portion of stores use that system, that the numbers would be fairly representative of how SL shops as a whole.

Agreed, of course we would then also need the MP aggregated data too.  I suspect that isn't available publicly.

Most that use the Caspervend system have it connected to their Marketplace, so I can tell you when, how, what and where from MP as well.   So, really... just from the total numbers from Caspervend, you could make a good estimation for all around sales.

Recently i had to take a rant from a madlander, because he couldnt take/accept the fact, im paying 1K/week for a 2K sqm water protected homestead parcel.
He tried to convince me so hard, that i should move to madlands, to change my self built lovely home for a 200LD/week multiscene skybox.
So, madlands also seem to create mad and stubborn minds.

One person's madness is another person's genius. In this case, it turns out that neither is mad, and that both are equally stubborn.

Seen from his point of view, you are right. I must have appeared very stubborn to him. But does that make his childish and jealous behaviour any better?
I dont even care about, if someone lives in a cardboard box or in the middle of a 3x3 sim setup.

You didn't describe his behaviour. You just called it a rant, so I was only commenting on the fact that when 2 people continue to disagree on something like this, they are both right for themselves, and they are both equally stubborn about the other's view.

You said, "So, madlands also seem to create mad and stubborn minds".

What about the thread do you find annoying?  And why would it possibly get locked?  Nobody has said anything even partially bad.

Its annoying because some guy comes here, started a post claiming he joined at 8, and is totally world weary at age 20.... riiiiight.

LL should ban him retroactively

I take it , you never did anything just a tad bit naughty when you were 8?  I know I did.  I walked to the store with my best friend, no adults, no permission...at 8 years old.  Mom was not happy, I got grounded for a bit....and life went on.  But it did not mean that by the time I was 20, I was still not allowed to go to the store on my own :P  And that is just one thing I did ... I did plenty of boundary pushing.  He is not the first , I am sure.

As for being 'world weary'..... maybe that is a stretch, but ...so? A lot of residents are now explaining how things are.  No harm done.  Much worse goes on in SL and in RL.

Just place your fingers in your ears, sing "tra-la-la-la-laaaa" and skip to the lolz ?

I tried a few weeks ago to find video of the comedy song, “Put your finger in your ear and sing ting-a-ling-a-loo”, but it doesn’t exist due to some copyright issue.
